Woman injured in M65 crash

A woman has suffered minor injuries after a crash on a motorway.


She had to be cut out of her vehicle after hitting the central reservation on the M65 near to junction 8 at Accrington about 12:15.

The eastbound carriageway is now clear.

Transport improvement 'vital' for Lancashire communities

The head of a bus company in Lancashire has backed calls from an independent think tank to improve transport schemes in the county.

There has already been major investment in East Lancashire on the Pennine Reach scheme, but IPPR North said more money is needed to be spent to link local communities.

Alex Hornby, from the Blackburn Bus Company which has bought 18 new hi-tech buses, said: "What we're seeing now with the Northern Powerhouse agenda is putting transport at the heart of things. It's making sure we can connect people into the centres and out again."

The Northern Powerhouse is a government proposal to boost economic growth across the north of England.

Preston market hall redevelopment given green light

Planning permission has been granted for a new market hall in Preston.

Preston City Council's development will see glass and timber walls built under the existing Victorian market canopy. 

Trading box units under the fish market canopy will also be built. 

The opening will pave the way for the existing building to be replaced by a new cinema.

Boy, 14, missing from Blackpool home

A 14-year-old boy has been missing from his home in Blackpool for two weeks, prompting a police appeal.

Anthony Holder has not been seen since 26 July after disappearing from an address on Argosy Avenue.

A police spokesman said: “It has been two weeks since Anthony went missing now and we would urge anyone who has seen him or knows where he is to get in touch so that we can make sure he is safe and well.”

He is thought to be in the Thornton Cleveleys area.

Football: Burnley issues sanctions over pitch invasion at PNE derby

Burnley Football Club has issued sanctions to a number of supporters who ran on to the pitch during a derby against Preston North End in April.

Twelve fans received a range of restrictions including stadium bans and acceptable behaviour agreements.

The club said it is looking at CCTV footage to identify other supporters involved in the incident at Turf Moor.

BBC travel is reporting problems on the M65 due to a multi-vehicle accident.

One lane is closed between junctions 8 and 10 travelling eastbound, with reports of debris on the road and congestion running back to junction 7.

"We've always had a reaction from the players when we've lost games," the former Blackpool and Leeds United coach said.

"We were below par on Saturday, for whatever reason. Tonight we've got an opportunity to it round."

Woman, 80, injured in Lancaster robbery attempt

An 80-year-old woman suffered bruises and cuts to her face when she was pushed to the ground in what police believe was an attempted robbery.

The attack happened as the woman was making her way along Butterfield Street in Lancaster, on her way to go shopping on Friday.

“This was an appalling attack on a woman simply out to do her shopping at the weekend," a Lancashire Police spokesman said.

“We think that this was intended to be robbery which for some reason the offender stopped before carrying it out."

Man charged with murder of Burnley woman

A man has been charged with murder after the discovery of a 33-year-old woman's body.

The body of Nicola Howarth was found at a house in Wilton Street, Burnley on 22 July.

A post-mortem examination revealed she died from asphyxiation, Lancashire Police said.

Gary Fletcher, 34, has also been charged with child neglect and is due to appear at Burnley Magistrates' Court later.

Transport scheme 'will help regenerate communities'

The PennineReach transport project will open up fresh opportunities for regeneration across the region, a councillor has said.

The scheme to link major towns in East Lancashire by improving public transport is nearing completion and has seen new bus stations built in Blackburn and Accrington.

Phil Riley, the councillor responsible for regeneration at Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, has hailed the benefits of the project.

Police treating Blackpool flat fire as suspected arson

A fire in Blackpool which was believed to have started in a sofa is being treated as suspected arson, police have said.

The blaze occurred in a four-storey block of flats on Queen Street at about 21:00 last night.

Two people were rescued from the ground floor flat. They were not injured.

Chorley woman ready for Great Wall of China challenge

A woman from Chorley is set to fulfil a lifelong dream to walk along the Great Wall of China for charity.

Gosia Clarke will travel along a 50 km stretch to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society.

"My father-in-law got Alzheimer's in his 60s so it is a charity very close to our family," she said.

"The walk will be quite a challenge."
