Blackpool records biggest reduction in carbon emissions

A reduction in carbon emissions in Blackpool has been put down to work to insulate homes in the town.

New figures from the government show the resort has reduced its emissions by about 250,000 tonnes over the last 10 years - a reduction of around 30%.

The local council says the drop is the biggest across the United Kingdom.

Memorial unveiled for police officer killed in Blackpool

A memorial for a police officer killed in the line of duty in Blackpool has been unveiled.

Memorial to Supt Gerry Richardson

Supt Gerry Richardson was shot while attending an armed robbery in the resort on 23 August 1971.

He was shot twice in the stomach at point-blank range and died of his injuries later that day.

The memorial was unveiled at his former grammar school, which is now Aspire Academy.

Coping with brain injury 'extremely difficult', says victim of swimming lesson accident

A woman who was left severely brain damaged after she nearly drowned during a school swimming lesson says "living with a brain injury is extremely difficult".

Annie Woodland, 26, who now lives in Blackpool, was 10 when the accident happened Whitmore Primary School in Basildon, Essex.

She has received £2m compensation.

Wiggins confirms Tour of Britain inclusion

Olympic gold medallist Sir Bradley Wiggins has confirmed he will take part in this year's Tour of Britain cycle race.

The Chorley-based rider, 36, will compete in the annual event, which gets under way on 4 September.

Wiggins claimed his fifth Olympic gold medal in Rio, and his eighth overall, alongside Colne's Steven Burke in the men's team pursuit.

Man suffers stab wounds in Blackburn attack

A man has been arrested after another man was found with stab wounds in Blackburn.

The 35-year-old victim, who was found at an address near Oban Drive at about 15:50 yesterday afternoon, suffered a chest injury and is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

A woman has also been arrested in connection with the incident, while a second man was released without charge.

Blackpool woman who nearly drowned wins compensation

A woman who was left severely brain damaged after almost drowning during a school swimming lesson has received £2m in compensation.

It happened at a council-run swimming pool in Basildon in Essex 16 years ago, when Annie Woodland, who now lives in Blackpool, was just 10. 

A High Court trial last year concluded the lifeguards and swimming teachers responsible for Ms Woodland had breached their duty of care.

Ms Woodland says the payout will enable her family to move on.

A man has been rescued from a river bank in Nelson.

Annie Woodland, 24, who now lives in Blackpool, suffered brain damage in the incident at Gloucester Park Pool in Basildon, Essex.

A teacher and a pool life guard both failed to realise she was in trouble.

The family has successfully sued Essex County Council who said it did not comment on individual cases but had noted the High Court judgement.

There are seven flood warnings in place for the River Wyre.

A number of people had to leave their homes near Churchtown - an area badly affected by Storm Desmond last Christmas. 

Garstang Cricket Club - which was also flooded in December - is under water again.

Some roads in the county are still affected by floodwater this morning.
