Former racing driver's vision improved by new technology

A Fleetwood man who damaged his eyes in sporting injuries says his vision has been hugely improved thanks to breakthrough technology.

Former racing driver Bryan Casey was left only able to see things as a blur following separate injuries.

Now he has become the first man in the UK to test special new "eSight" glasses, which have a fitted camera that captures everything the user is looking at.

It then enhances the pictures and displays them on two screens in front of the wearer's eyes.

I thought they were going to be a load of rubbish, but as soon as I put them on it was just amazing. I saw my wife for the first time. Very very emotional.

Blackpool skipper selected to lead round-the-world race

A yachtsman from Lancashire has been selected as one of the people to captain the largest ocean race on the planet later this year.

Lance Shepherd, 53, from Blackpool, is one of twelve skippers picked to lead a team in the Clipper 2017-18 Round the World Yacht Race in August.

Lance, a former Royal Marine, began sailing at the age of 14 with his local Scout group, and has followed the race since then.

He said it is a "privilege" to have been selected, after passing a series of interviews and trials.

Each ocean we cross will be challenging with its own set of characteristics but I am really looking forward to it.

Bird flu restrictions in Wyre lifted

Bird flu restrictions have been lifted in the Pilling area after an outbreak of the disease in January .

A 10 km surveillance zone was introduced to limit the spread of the infection while the source was investigated. 

Over 60,000 birds, including pheasants, partridges and ducks were culled in the area to contain the spread.

Labour leader in Lancaster ahead of county council elections

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is on a visit to Lancashire as part of campaigning ahead of county council elections.

He is expected to speak about the importance of maintaining quality social care for the most vulnerable in the region.

Lancashire County Council has had to make cuts of 62% to its budget since 2010, putting pressure on the council to deliver services in provisions including social care.

Mr Corbyn is visiting Outrageous Ambition, a social enterprise care agency in Lancaster.

Morecambe manager Jim Bentley has questioned whether the club negotiated the best deal for striker Tom Barkhuizen when he  moved to Preston  in January.

He has scored four goals in eight games since his move to the Lilywhites.

Ex-Blackpool player Barkhuizen, 23, had  mutually cancelled  his deal at the Shrimps but the League Two side did get compensation for the transfer.

"Let's not forget we've sold our best player who is now pulling up trees at Preston," said Bentley.

Robbery leaves shop worker "very shaken"

A staff member at a newsagents in Leyland was left "very shaken" after being threatened with a makeshift imitation firearm during a robbery.

It happened at Towngate News when the offender approached the male staff member and demanded cash from the till on Monday morning.

The robber was described as about 5ft 8ins, wearing dark clothes and a hi-visibility vest with "Casey" on the back.  

Police have released CCTV and are asking anyone with information to contact them.

New 'high-tech' buses ready to roll in Blackpool

Blackpool will soon have 25 new modern buses in operation, complete with wi-fi, USB charging points, and audio visual announcements.

Blackpool Council said the buses will be launched next month to serve some of the town's most popular routes.

Alston Hall Blaze: Latest from fire service

Incident commander Shaun Walton, of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, has given us the latest developments on the fire at Alston Hall, which left the listed building severely damaged.

He says they are working with the local authority to ensure that the working conditions are as safe as possible for those on site.

Firefighters are currently assessing the stability of Alston Hall after the 19th century Grade II-listed building was hit by fire and significantly damaged.

Patrols stepped up after schoolboy assaulted

Police patrols in the area surrounding the canal towpath in Hest Bank have been increased after a schoolboy was touched inappropriately.

The 11-year-old was cycling along the towpath, and was approached by a man before being groped.

The offender is described as in his 40s, slim, with brown hair and wearing a black coat and carrying a North Face rucksack.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Firefighters 'save significant part' of blaze-hit Alston Hall

A senior firefighter at the site of the Alston Hall fire at Longridge says crews have managed to salvage a significant part of the building.

Shaun Walton said there has been "quite considerable damage" due to the collapse from the roof to the first floor and in some parts, right down to the ground floor.

The fire has mostly been put out now, but he said the service is still concerned about the stability of the building, which they are currently assessing.

All be it, we have salvaged a tower that's a part of the construction and a significant part of the ground floor due to the efforts of the crews involved.

Firefighters probing cause of Alston Hall blaze

An investigation is due to begin into  a fire which has severely damaged Alston Hall in Longridge.

Crews were call to the Grade II-listed mansion at about 22:40 last night. It is thought the building was being renovated when the fire broke out.

More than 70 firefighters and ten engines worked to tackle the blaze, using water from a nearby pond. One person suffered a "minor ankle injury", the fire service said.

The cause remains unclear but an investigation is due to begin later this morning.
