Highs of 12C are expected.

Sunday will be windy again and wet for a time, but it will turn brighter and colder later.

Lancashire named England's best golf county

Lancashire has been named the England Golf County of the Year at a ceremony at Lord's cricket ground in London.

The accolade at the England Golf Awards was for work with local organisations to grow the sport in the county.

The Lancashire Golf Union will receive £6,000 worth of bespoke research.

This is a huge pat on the back for everyone who has contributed to the initiatives and it validates the work we are doing.

It’s great for clubs, for county development officers, for volunteers, for everyone involved.

Grooming victim from Chorley praises children's charity

A 19-year-old man from Chorley who was sexually abused as a teenager after being groomed on Facebook has praised a children's charity which helped him.

Kyran Peet, who has waived his anonymity, told BBC Radio Lancashire he was 13 when he was groomed by a 23-year-old man he met online.

His abuser was jailed after Kyran received help and support from the Children's Society.

'Prisoner' call to phone-in show 'breached BBC guidelines'

A late night phone-in show on BBC local radio  breached the BBC's editorial guidelines  for allowing a caller to talk about his purported sex crimes.

The caller, who said he was speaking from prison, claimed he had had sex with children, that they had enjoyed it and that he had made "child sex" DVDs.

Rather than cutting him off, presenter Allan Beswick spoke to the caller for more than four minutes.

The committee described his actions as "a most serious error of judgement".

Man wanted on recall in connection with assault and burglary

A 28-year-man is wanted in connection with robbery, assault and burglary in separate incidents in Skelmersdale and Greater Manchester.

Craig Shelley, from Upholland, near Wigan, is wanted after a man was punched in the head and face and had his car keys stolen on 26 December on Ormskirk Road, Upholland. 

He is also wanted in connection with an assault on 20 November in the Greater Manchester area after a woman was bitten on her neck. A burglary also occurred at an address on the same day.

Shelley, who has links to Skelmersdale and Orrell, is also wanted on recall to prison.

He is described as white, about 5ft 9in tall, with blue eyes and of medium build.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police.

Blackpool HGV driver fears UK hauliers losing out to Europeans over salary

The arrival of drivers from other countries is lowering the wages of UK-based hauliers, a former HGV driver from Blackpool has claimed.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Andy says it was "soul-destroying" after seeing his salary drop by the equivalent of "£160 a week compared to 15 years ago".

Growing concern for missing Manchester man

Police are appealing for information after the disappearance of a 16-year-old from Harpurhey in Manchester.

David Johnstone, who police believe could be staying within the local area or Blackpool, was last seen on 10 March.

He is described as slim, 5ft 6in (1.72m), with short brown hair. He normally wears sportswear and black and orange trainers.

Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust awarded £50,000 for maternity project

A health trust in west Lancashire has been awarded £50,000 by NHS England to look at new ways to improve maternity services.

Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is one of three winners from almost 50 applications for support from the Maternity Challenge Fund.

The aim is for women and their partners to give feedback over the next six months on what changes are needed.

Blackburn could have defender Charlie Mulgrew and striker Sam Gallagher back for the visit of Preston after both were troubled by hamstring problems.  

Midfielder Corry Evans (groin) is less likely to be ready as Rovers look to extend their six-game unbeaten run. 

Preston will assess Paul Gallagher, Alex Baptiste and Marnick Vermijl, who could return after periods out injured.

But manager Simon Grayson will be without John Welsh, Calum Woods and Tyias Browning, who are all sidelined.

Gale warning cancels ferry sailings

Strong winds forecast for the Irish Sea have forced the cancellation of ferries between the Isle of Man and the UK .  


The  Isle of Man Met Office  said winds could reach gale force eight at about midday and reach speeds nearing 50mph (80km/h) off the Lancashire coast.

Ferry operator the Steam Packet Company cancelled the 08:45 sailing between Douglas and Heysham and the return 14:15 sailing.

Friday's 19:45 sailing is expected to leave on time.

Appeal made for missing Skelmersdale teenager

Police are appealing for information over a missing 17-year-old girl from Skelmersdale.

Sarah Farrell was last seen on 11 March in Mere Close.

She is described as white, 5ft 2in (1.6m), with shoulder length, dark brown, straight hair and has a Liverpool accent. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a red padded parka jacket and black trainers with a gold tick.

The teenager has links to Skelmersdale, Ormskirk and Burscough and anyone with any information is asked to contact police.

Rail services to be disrupted by 'improvement works'

Rail company Northern have tweeted about disruption which will affect the line between Blackpool and Preston this weekend, as "improvement works" are carried out.

Football: Dyche positive despite Burnley's away winless run

Burnley manager Sean Dyche says his side's continuing search for an away win is not having a detrimental affect on his players.

The Clarets have lost 12 of their 14 away games in the Premier League this season - most recently their 2-1 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield.

They travel to Sunderland tomorrow who are rooted to the bottom of the table.

Lancashire sees sharpest rise in female arrests

The number of women arrested in Lancashire increased by 46% in 2016 - the largest rise in the country.

Figures from the Prison Reform Trust show Lancashire Police arrested 4,500 women last year, compared with just over 3,000 in the previous 12 months. 

Nationally, arrests fell in the majority of police areas, leading the trust to suggest there is a "postcode lottery".

Baby born during hospice respite stay

The mother of a toddler dying of cancer gave birth to a baby boy during a respite stay in a hospice .  

Lauren Doherty gave birth at Derian House Hospice in Chorley, as she was staying with 18-month-old Gracie on Wednesday.

Ms Doherty, 22, from Rochdale, said she was "relieved" Gracie got to meet her brother Charlie.

The hospice said the first baby born there was a "symbol of hope".

Company bosses jailed over roof fall death

Three company bosses have been jailed following the death of a man who fell from a roof he was working on .

Ben Edge, 25, was working without safety equipment in windy conditions in a quarry in Ramsbottom, in 2014.  

Christopher and Robert Brown, who admitted trying to cover up what had happened, were jailed for 20 months. Mark Aspin was sentenced to a year.  

Aspin, 37, of Hameldon Road, Hapton, was jailed after admitting health and safety offences.
