These views were captured by a helicopter high above the congestion.

Gritters 'work around clock'

According to Sheffield Council, since the start of the winter its gritting teams have covered over 37,000 miles of road across the district.

Jayne Dunn, cabinet member for environment, recycling and streetscene, says: "That's just over the equivalent of travelling once around the world.

"Since 18:00 last night and throughout the day today the team have been working around the clock to help keep drivers on the move," she adds.

Council pitches closed

All sporting fixtures and training sessions on council-owned pitches for this weekend are cancelled,

Bradford Council has announced. This includes games on school pitches and at Rawdon Meadows.

The council says that due to recent snowfall it's been impossible to carry out any maintenance or line marking.

"Many of the pitches are covered in snow and if a thaw occurs the pitches will become very wet and would suffer substantial damage if sporting events were played on them."

Earlier, I was just a few miles up the road at the entrance to the A628 Woodhead Pass (pictured) and that was closed overnight and this morning. That route has now reopened.

It's absolutely treacherous on those higher routes and it's causing a lot of disruption. There must be about 15cm of snow up there.

'1,500 tonnes of salt'

Oliver Wright

BBC Local Live

Sheffield City Councillor Jayne Dunn has said about 16cm (about six inches) of snow fell on the higher parts of the city overnight and there have been further accumulations today.

She said gritters had put down "1,500 tonnes of salt on the network so far - that's the weight equivalent of around 188 double decker buses".

She said: "The teams are working very hard to try and keep the city moving once again we also need the public to do their bit. Please do not abandon your cars in the middle of the road and ensure that our gritters are able to pass by."
