Stroke prevention: Do you have AF?

An award-winning stroke prevention project in Bradford aimed at people who have a disorder called atrial fibrillation (AF) has been praised in a new report.

But what exactly is AF and how do I know if I've got it?

Atrial fibrillation (AF), which causes an irregular heartbeat, is the most common heart rhythm problem, affecting up to 800,000 people - roughly one in 100 - in the UK.

In AF, the heart cannot work as well as it should and blood clots can form, which, in turn, increases the risk of a stroke.

Checking pulse
Science Photo Library

Do I have atrial fibrillation (AF)?

  • An irregular pulse could be a sign that you have AF
  • It will feel erratic, and beats may be variable in strength
  • AF is most common in people aged over 55
  • If you think you might have AF, you should get yourself checked out by a doctor
  • Often, the underlying cause is not found, but AF is more common in people with high blood pressure and heart disease
