Weather: Mild night ahead with cloudy day tomorrow

Another mild night as temperatures hold in double figures. Rather cloudy with outbreaks of showery rain gradually spreading east. A freshening breeze and lows of 10C (50F).


Tomorrow, it'll be mostly cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain at times, always more persistent in the west. Some drier, brighter spells too. Brisk south to southwest winds. Highs of 17C (63F).

Deputy Labour leader gives speech in Wilson's shadow

Deputy Labour leader Tom Watson was in Huddersfield this afternoon on the campaign trail for the Stay camp in the EU referendum.

He gave a speech at the feet of Harold Wilson's statue near the train station.

Pensioners protest at clinic closure

You never want to cross a feisty pensioner, and these OAPs have been protesting in Garforth today against the closure of a health centre. 


The demo was outside the headquarters of Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust, which decided to close the Garforth clinic earlier this year. 

The trust says there are other clinics nearby, and it'll help patients to set up their own travel plans.

Police are investigating an assault on a man in Brighouse. The 30-year-old man received a stab wound in the incident on Thursday evening and is currently being treated in hospital.

Travel: Accident shuts lane on M62 J28 westbound

We've got the hard shoulder closed and very slow traffic on the M62 westbound between J28 (A650 Tingley) and J27 (M621 Gildersome), because of an accident.

Bike charity profits from proceeds of crime

Here's a nice tail about criminals' cash being put to use for a good cause.

West Yorkshire Police has just donated almost £5,000 to Birstall Urban Motorcycle Project for Youth (BUMPY).

They're a charity that gives young people the chance to channel their energies into off-road biking.

BUMPY, was set up in 1989, and they train kids to ride safely on and off road and also teach them to maintain their bikes.

Doors close on leisure centre in Cleckheaton

A leisure centre in Cleckheaton closes today, despite protests from local people.

Elderly and disabled bowlers who use an indoor green at Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre say they're being penalised because the facilities won't be replaced. 

Kirklees Council says closing the centre is the only way to repair an adjoining school and that other sport facilities are available in the area.   

Drug smuggler sentenced to 15 years

A West Yorkshire drug smuggler has been sentenced to 15 years after he was caught trying to bring heroin into the UK.

Hafiz Akhtar, who's 34 and from Leeds Road in Dewsbury, was trapped after investigators searched a container at docks in Liverpool and found the drugs hidden inside furniture.

Roadside litter delaying road repairs?

The Highways Agency has revealed it's collected 4,000 of bags of litter from Yorkshire's motorways in just four months. 

The agency says the M606 near Bradford is a "litter hotspot" and collecting each bag costs them around £40, which is money which could be better spent on mending the roads.

Appeal for missing girl, 16

Police are asking for any information on 16-year-old Marika Pompova, who has gone missing.

Woman told ex she was at his house in her wedding dress

A woman told her ex-partner that she was going to turn up at his Lepton home in a wedding dress before throwing eggs around the property and attacking him. Enraged Letitia Simmonds, of Towngate, Highburton, then turned on John Tarazi’s new girlfriend, hurling racist abuse at her and damaging her car.

Bradford City: Millwall League One playoff preview

In the meantime, here's a full match preview of the game tonight. For those with a passing interest, kick-off is at 19:45 at the New Den. The Bantams have a 3-1 deficit against Millwall, with Bradford manager, Phil Parkinson, having to cope with a few injury worries.

Millennium Square to transform into cinema for summer

Millennium Square in Leeds is going to be turned into an outdoor cinema this summer, the city council have announced.

Star wars

They will create a fully-seated auditorium, and will be showing films such as Avengers Assemble, Skyfall and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

It'll all kick off on 27 July with Grease, let's hope the weather stays okay. Nobody likes soggy popcorn.

Leeds lad prepares to take to the stage

A young lad from Leeds is set to play Billy Elliot in a stage show, with a score that's been written by Sir Elton John.

Matthew Lyons, from Guiseley, (pictured second from left) is one of five young actors who'll play the part as the show goes on the road until next year. 

The story's set in a North East mining village during the mid-80s strike. It began as a film and went on to become a West End smash.

Travel: Headingley delays expected

Police warning over phone scam

Police in Bradford are alerting people of a phone scam, where fraudsters are calling people and telling them that they would be arrested for tax evasion.


One woman was told she owed £4,000 in tax and would need a lawyer.

Police are investigating, but no victim is believed to have transferred any money.

Travel update: Accident in Leeds causing a few problems

The general travel picture this morning is "busy but moving" across West Yorkshire.

There has been an accident on Marsh Lane in Leeds which is causing a few problems on the A64.

Thousands have to travel for mental health treatment

Nearly 5,500 mental health patients in England had to travel out of their area last year because of a lack of hospital beds, new figures show.  

Including one patient who had to travel from Leeds to Glasgow, a total of 224 miles.

Care Minister Alistair Burt said the problem was unacceptable and promised to stop it within five years.
