M62 crash: Latest police statement

The car which plunged through the central reservation in this morning's M62 crash had collided with a lorry moments earlier.

After crossing from the eastbound to the westbound carriageway the car then collided with another car and two lorries.

The man in the car died at the scene, say Greater Manchester Police.

Police are now trying to identify him and contact his family.

A man and a woman who were travelling in one of the other vehicles have been taken to hospital for treatment to serious injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening at this stage.

PC Ed Lister from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said emergency services were continuing to deal with a large scene near junction 21 of the M62 involving multiple vehicles.

There are considerable traffic tailbacks following this collision and we are advising people wherever possible to avoid this area and use another route. The motorway remains closed on both sides. We are hoping to shortly be able to free those who are currently stuck in the traffic queues, but are still asking for other motorists to avoid this route for the next few hours where possible.

M62: Man killed crashed through central reservation

The man who died on the M62 this morning crashed through the central reservation in the accident, the Highways Agency said.

There are severe delays  on the M62 eastbound from J18 to J20 and westbound from J23 – J21 as traffic approaches the local diversions.

There are signed diversions for both directions; eastbound traffic is to leave at J20 and follow the 'Hollow Black Circle' via the A627M, A664, A6193 and westbound traffic is to follow the 'Solid Black Square' from J21 via the A6193, A664 and A627M roads.

Huge delays are inevitable. Sally Weir contacted us on our Facebook page - she's currently on the M62.

I'm sat in it about 15 cars back from incident. Many, many emergency services doing an amazing job I'm sure. Awfully tragic. Police saying it will remain closed and will be working on redirecting traffic off the motorway in stages. It could be hours. My thoughts with all those involved."
