Former councillor admits fraudulent benefit claims

A former Richmond Town Councillor has been prosecuted over a string of fraudulent Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and Council Tax Reduction claims over three years.

She failed to tell benefit officers that her circumstances had changed.

She was sentenced to a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay full court costs of £612.60 plus a victim surcharge of £20.

New £1 coin: What do you need to know?

Nick Wilmshurst

BBC Local Live

If you're a numismatist (that's a coin and currency collector to you and me) you'll be excited about the arrival of the new £1 coin.

One pound coin

It comes into circulation this month, signalling the beginning of the end for the round pound, which will be completely phased out by 15 October.

Here's what you need to know at a glance:

  • What will the new £1 coin look like?

Well, like the picture above! It's about the the same size as the old one but has 12 edges and is gold and silver. It also features a hologram.

  • Why the change to our change?

The new design is meant to be harder for criminals to fake and is billed as the "most secure coin in the world".

  • What do I need to do?

Shoppers can use both old and new coins from 28 March. They have until 15 October to spend old £1 coins or return them to the bank.

  • What about vending machines and parking meters?

Vending machines, slot machines, parking meters and toilet turnstiles will  all have to be adapted  to accept the new coins and reject old ones.

  • Are £1 coins worth collecting?

Old £1 coins could become collectible when they cease to become legal tender, according to experts.

What should be put on the Leeds International Pool site?

Nick Wilmshurst

BBC Local Live, Yorkshire

The site where Leeds International Pool used to stand has been empty since 2010, but now moves are being made to redevelop the plot.

Leeds International Pool

Leeds City Council says that they're asking developers and investors to register their interest in the 1.1-hectare site, and they're suggesting that it should be developed into, you guessed it, more offices and a hotel.

The pool was built in the 1960s and was dogged by maintenance issues in its early days but remained open until 2007.

Any suggestions on what you'd like to see there, let us know .

Missing Doncaster rhea tore rescuer's trousers

At the moment we have no idea who this rhea belongs to, so we're appealing to anyone who thinks he might be theirs to get in touch."
