Takeaway forced to close after anti-social behaviour

A takeaway in Sheffield has been forced to close by police because of antisocial behaviour problems and drug dealing.

The S1 Food Bar in Fitzalan Square will be closed for 28 days after an order was applied from Sheffield Magistrates Court.

The takeaway has also had its licence to sell alcohol and provide ‘late night refreshment’ revoked because of a licencing review last week.

This takeaway was a persistent problem in Fitzalan Square and we were receiving and responding to numerous reports regarding potential criminality and antisocial behaviour."

Man assaulted in Wakefield

Police in Wakefield are appealing for information following an assault on a man in Lupset. 

Officers were called to Old Crown Road on Saturday 25 March at about 18:00. The victim, a man in his 40s, had been driving in the area when a second car approached his vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle got out of the car and assaulted the victim. He received a serious head injury in the incident and was taken to hospital for treatment. 

This was an extremely distressing incident which has left the victim with a significant injury. We are continuing our enquiries to trace those responsible for this attack and would appeal for anyone with information to please get in touch."

Violette Uwamahoro: Rwanda court order release of Leeds woman

A Rwandan court has ordered the release of a pregnant woman from the United Kingdom who was accused of involvement in a plot against Rwanda's government.

Violette Uwamahoro appeared last week in court in Rwanda's capital Kigali, charged with spreading state secrets.

A judge said there was no evidence to back up the charges and she should be freed on bail.

Mrs Uwamahoro, from Leeds, was arrested in February after going to Rwanda for a family funeral.

Barnsley man fined for selling dangerous vehicle

A man from Barnsley has been fined for selling a dangerous car.

Adam Pistelok, 30, trading as Yorkshire Cars4U, was convicted on Thursday 16 March after selling a Suzuki Jimny last year.

He pleaded guilty to five offences relating to the sale of the car advertised as being in 'very tidy condition' and with 79,000 miles on the clock - it was actually in extremely poor condition and with a higher mileage than stated.

He was fined a total of £500 by Barnsley magistrates and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £50 and £1,500 prosecution costs, as well as refund the complainant a total of £1,230 for the purchase price of the car.

Consultation to end on changes to MPs constituencies

Today's the last day of a consultation about changes to MPs constituencies.

It's part of a plan to reduce the number of Members of Parliament from 650 down to 600 and to make the number of voters in each area more similar.

In South Yorkshire hundreds of people have submitted comments.

There's particular concern about Mosborough and Beighton in Sheffield being moved into a Rotherham seat and about Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency being scrapped and parts of it being put into a West Yorkshire constituency.

Body found at former hotel site

A 19-year-old man has been found dead at the old Hallam Tower hotel building on Manchester Road in Sheffield.

The body was discovered yesterday afternoon.

Police say the man's family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

His death is being treated as unexplained. 

Yorkshire prison bucking a violent trend

A new report into a high-security jail near York has found violence between prisoners and staff decreased last year.

It goes against the national trend, where a number of prisons saw rioting in 2016.

But Full Sutton does have some areas to improve on with an independent review saying it needs to do more to get new prisoners into employment and more to stop them falling into debt and risk being threatened by other inmates.

The report found there's a gang culture within some elements of the Muslim faith group and that prisoners owing money could be pressured into converting to Islam to avoid debt.

A former Weighbridge building in Rotherham has undergone a major makeover in order to become the new headquarters for a local charity.

Shiloh is a voluntary project which helps hundreds of homeless and vulnerable people in the town.

Last year their future was secured thanks to Rotherham Council, who committed to the revamp of the old weighbridge to provide the charity with new home.

Denise Campbell Brown, from West Yorkshire, married her husband Nev in September last year. On honeymoon she discovered she had fibroids, non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb.

The condition, which affects around one in three women, can cause symptoms such as heavy or painful periods and abdominal pain.

MPs on the All Party Parliamentary Group on women's health are warning  not all women are not getting the right diagnosis and information about treatments .

Red kite found dead in Nidderdale

Police are investigating after a red kite was found dead in North Yorkshire.

The dead bird was discovered near Greenhow in Nidderdale. 

It's thought it had been shot. 

It's taken many years to reintroduce red kites after their near-extinction from the UK and they have special legal protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

With the news that Wentworth Woodhouse, near Rotherham, has been sold for £7m to the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, here are a few facts about the house you might not know:

  • It's believed to be the largest private house in the UK, with 250,000 sq ft of floor space
  • Open to the public for tours, Wentworth Woodhouse has more than 300 rooms and a 606ft facade
  • The history of the house and the nearby village of Wentworth is linked with three aristocratic families: Wentworths, Watsons and Fitzwilliams
  • It's a regular star of TV and film - making appearances in productions like Mr Turner, Antiques Roadshow and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell - to name but three

David Storey: Booker Prize-winning author dies aged 83

This Sporting Life author David Storey, from Wakefield, has died at the age of 83.

His much-lauded 1960 debut novel was based on his experiences as a professional rugby league player and was made in to a film three years later.

It leaves the base near Paris and begins the journey to Elvington today on the back of two big transporters. 

The plane is 77ft long so it's going to be quite a spectacle.

Pupils in top gear at racing competition

Schoolchildren from Bradfield School are in the driving seat ahead of a competition at the home of British racing, Silverstone, on Wednesday.

The children are revved up after they've made air powered F1 cars out of balsa wood, and it's lights out and go go go in the UK and Ireland National final!

Term-time holiday absences: Wakefield figures show pupils missing lessons

Official figures suggest term-time holidays account for a quarter of unauthorised absences from schools across England.

Pupils in Yorkshire and the Humber and the North East of England lost the most time to holidays. 

In Wakefield more than a third of absences between 2015 and 2016 were because of holidays.

Police appeal after serious sex assault in Heckmondwike

Detectives are looking for a man in his late 20s after a woman suffered a serious sex assault in Heckmondwike in the early hours of Sunday.

Police say the woman had been attacked near a grassed area in Little Green Lane at Six Lane End.

The 36-year-old victim met the suspect in the Acapulco Nightclub in Waterhouse Street, Halifax, on Saturday night, before leaving with him in a taxi from outside the club. 

The taxi driver dropped them off in Little Green Lane and then left the scene.

We are appealing for the taxi driver to come forward."

Bird numbers using farm land is on increase

The number of birds living and feeding on farm land in Yorkshire is on the rise.

A number of projects to create nesting sites and winter feeding areas are being carried out by farmers who are paid by the government for their work. 

Surveys by the RSPB  show increasing numbers of birds on land where the projects take place.

Wentworth Woodhouse repairs could cost over £40m

As we've been hearing, one of Europe's largest stately homes has been bought by a conservation group for £7m.

Wentworth Woodhouse, near Rotherham, has been sold to the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust.  

It's thought the house will undergo a 15-year repair project costing more tha £40m.

The 300-room house was put up for sale a couple of years ago following the death of owner Clifford Newbold.

A previous £8m deal to sell it to a Hong Kong-based investment company  fell through  in November 2015.

Saltburn cliff deaths: Head teacher 'devastated'

The former head teacher of two teenagers who were found dead at the bottom of a cliff says she is devastated by their deaths .

The  bodies of Harry Watson and Alex Yeoman  were found by officers at Huntcliff in Saltburn on Friday.

"We are a very close knit community so the devastating loss of these two lovely young men, who had so much to live for, will have a huge impact on both students and staff.

The 17-year-olds had been pupils at Freebrough Academy in Brotton.

Principal Rachel Prentice said: "We are both shocked and saddened by the devastating news of our ex-students. Our first thoughts are with their friends and families."

Cleveland Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances but said they were not treating the deaths as suspicious.

The blaze, which has now been put out, could be seen from the M62. 

The emergency services say about 40 firefighters dealt with a "half-mile flame front".

Woman treated after fire at flat in Armley, Leeds

A woman's been taken to hospital after a fire at a flat in Armley.

Fire crews were called to Westerly Rise on Mistress Lane just after 21:00 last night. 

The woman was given oxygen therapy by fire service personnel and taken to hospital by ambulance with slight smoke inhalation. Four other flats have been damaged by smoke.
