Goodnight!

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Thanks for joining us on the live blog tonight.

That was a tough test of a second half for Leeds United, but who popped up right at the death? Chris Wood, of course, was on target once more, cancelling out the deficit at the eleventh hour from Jamaal Lascelle's earlier goal.

We'll be back on Monday, when Leeds welcome Wolves - join us then, and, in the meantime, enjoy your weekend.

ROB GREEN: I've evolved as a player

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Rob Green
PA

It was a point that felt like a win. We didn't show our full ability and as disappointing as that is, it's not always going to be perfect. To cling on and keep going, as badly as you play, always gives you a chance in football. Nobody gave up and we snuck a point at the end. It feels like a fantastic point.

[My own performance] was pleasing. We do a lot of work with reaction saves, so to bring it into a game is pleasing. If I can be there for the team, that's my job.

It's pleasing, and I think working with the manager and goalkeeper coach - being able to adapt in football is a big thing, and I'm learning stuff at 36, 37, about where to move, where to get a pass. It helps you grow in confidence. It sounds basic, but it's not stuff I've ever been taught before.

It's how football's moved on - it's wanting to be a player, and not just a footballer.

How did Hernandez do?

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Hernandez started well and was dictating the play - things changed when he got kicked on the head, though, and he didn't really get into the game for much of the second half.

What happens next?

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

I think Wolves becomes a must-win game because Leeds will want to build on the back of the point they've picked up tonight. It will be a fitting end to this draw tonight.

I said Leeds needed to win three of the last seven games - guarantee nine points. It's a cliche, but there are no easy games. Wolves will be difficult, as will Burton. But I believe Leeds have the players and characters to put on a show - they have the determination to win the three points.

Leeds' balance improved

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Leeds were in the game in the first half. They started really well.

Leeds have a balance across the team now. They have players with a range of attributes - Pedraza likes to come into the box and score goals, and Roofe has got better and better. I can see Roofe being a real asset for Leeds.

Benitez has been talking to the press about how much time was added on, but you can question why his players didn't score from numerous set-pieces.

Leeds character key

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

It wasn't a perfect second half performance, but that character and spirit about the team were huge - absolutely huge.

Leeds were poor, and we know that. They were second to second balls, made poor decisions at times, were guilty of sloppy passes. But like Monk said - it's having that spirit to dig deep and grind things out.

BreakingWhat happened to Vieira?

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Monk confirmed it was illness that ruled Vieira out tonight - he had been due to start.

GARRY MONK: We have to be proud of this team

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

We know we can be better with the ball, but it's very hard to criticise this group. We have to be proud of them, and we have to keep supporting them, pushing them. They gave their all tonight - in a different way to Saturday - but we have to keep pushing them.

Garry MonkLeeds United Head Coach

GARRY MONK: Mentality key for Leeds

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Garry Monk
PA

We always knew it was going to be a difficult game, but we stuck to our guns. We started the game really well, and had a chance on ten minutes that we should have really scored from, and that could have changed the game. We defended really well and were resilient, but you can't keep giving away so many set-pieces. We gave away too many, but I never doubt the spirit of this team, and their fight to go to the very end.

We know we didn't play our best in the second half with the ball, but our spirit and endeavour can get a lot out of games.

We were conceding a lot of cheap set pieces and the lads will be disappointed with the one they conceded from. We know we can play better but that spirit and endeavour is something I'm very proud of. I knew we'd need that mentality from the start - it can sometimes win you points. You need that, as well as good football. You want to win every game but we played a very good side today. I can't say anything but credit to my players.

Man of the Match?

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Jansson was my Man of the Match - he threw his body in front of all kinds of shots. It was a great battle between him and Mitrovic, and he was involved in the equaliser.

Leeds were out of the game for long spells, and the way it was looking - I'll be honest, I didn't think Leeds would equalise. I think that's why everyone is so giddy, because it was so unexpected.

Noel on Jansson

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Monk will know Leeds didn't play well - but they got the job done.

What do Leeds do about Jansson? It's such a hard one for Leeds - what are they going to do? One more yellow and you lose him. Do they wait? Lose him for the play offs? Take one for the team in the 80th minute against Wolves, so you know you have him in the play offs? Take that ban for the final three games? Wait until they've secured their top six place?

If Leeds are in the play offs, they'll want him then, simple as.

Monk knows how big this is

Katherine Hannah

It was great to see Monk celebrate that equaliser, too. He's normally quite composed - but he loved that. He was punching the air. He knows how big this performance is.

What went wrong for the goal?

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Newcastle came out the blocks and attacked, attacked, attacked. Leeds weren't convincing in the second half, but they stayed in the game.

Leeds switched off for the corner, simple as. They marked the space, not the men, and Mitrovic was unmarked. Lascelles showed the desire to head it over and meet an easy ball across the box. Leeds should have stopped the ball at source.

How did Leeds do defensively?

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

I thought Jansson was immense. The whole back four, though - bar the goal, they never switched off.

Rob Green has kept Leeds in so many games this season and he was making reaction save after reaction save. He gave Leeds a lifeline - thanks to him, they could go on to get a point.

Leeds never beaten

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Newcastle put Leeds under immense pressure -  they had 19 corners to Leeds' none, and the majority of that half was played in Leeds' half. Considering Wood hasn't been in the game that much - it speaks volumes that he had that level of concentration, in such a massive game, at that time.

It's not about stats and corners - it's about the end result. Leeds persisted and are never beaten.

How's the table looking?

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Katherine Hannah

BBC West Yorkshire Sport

Newcastle 4 points behind Brighton after that. Leeds are back in fourth, level with points on Reading but 17 goals better off. Still close, but a big point from Leeds tonight, that. Win on Monday and that's four from six.

A huge equaliser

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Adam Pope

BBC West Yorkshire Sport

That was a big, big result. This is the end of the season where you have to show character - that could be an absolutely huge equaliser, at this stage especially.

The finish - the ball's up in the air a little bit, so it was a difficult finish. He's had many of those this season where he's had to keep that composure and strength to finish things.

Leeds got out of jail

Newcastle 1-1 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Leeds will know they have been absolutely outplayed in that half - but they stayed in the game. Do that, and they always have a chance of getting something out of games.

That was the one chance that they had - it was Chris Wood's first and only chance of the game. It was a clinical finish and it came from the right player. Chris Wood to the rescue, again.

BreakingGOAL: NEWCASTLE UNITED 1-1 LEEDS UNITED - WOOD

Newcastle's short corner hits Charlie Taylor, by the way, before Mitrovic gets cautioned for kicking the ball away. Colback goes into the book, too - smacks Kemar Roofe in the small of the back to stop the Leeds break.

Sacko's left-footed ball is flicked out but Hernandez will thread in a last-gasp cross. Jansson flicks on to Leeds' danger man - one outcome when Wood gets the ball.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Leeds have not been at the races - and when they've got out of their half, their final ball has let them down.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Taylor tries to work his way past Mitrovic, but Newcastle turn it into a break of their own - Bartley averts the danger for Leeds but the visitors can't get out of their half. Another corner surrendered.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Five added minutes - and a fan on the pitch, away to our right. Pontus Jansson is confronted by the fan until two stewards come on and wrestle him to the ground.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Doukara drives Leeds forward and pumps a ball in from the left side, but his ball into the box is wild and misdirected. No way anyone in the box was attacking that. Perez off and Diame on for Newcastle.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Leeds enjoying possession around Newcastle's area but are closed out before they can get into the box. Doukara softly surrenders possession and Mitrovic breaks, Rob Green punching the ball clear at the other end.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Sacko runs at Dummett, swinging the ball high to Taylor on the other flank. Anita keeps the Leeds man at bay, though, and the best Taylor can do is thrust a wasteful cross beyond everybody.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Hernandez contests with Shelvey but the Newcastle man clears - no nonsense defending.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

17th corner of the game for Newcastle - but it's headed over the top and wide. 17th. Let that sink in...

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Matt Ritchie off, and Deandre Yedlin on. Ritchie has been quality tonight.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Sacko's hooked cross drops for Doukara - but he drags the ball under his foot before Anita catches him in possession. He tries to scramble a pass to Mitorvic but it's a little wayward. Have to wonder if Sacko should have let that ball roll out for a corner, initially - he mopped up to cross instead.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Leeds mop up from the free kick but Hernandez can't switch the play rapidly enough. He's too ponderous and misses a gift of a chance to unleash Leeds down the right.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Taylor's sliding challenge demolishes Matt Ritchie - Newcastle free kick in their own half.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Leeds have not forced the issue in this half, from the outset. Newcastle have dominated and won their battles. Colback replacing Hayden - just what Leeds need - but Leeds have not got going, at all. Newcastle have upped their game and are stepping onto every second ball - Leeds are waiting.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Berardi off, Taylor on, as Leeds make their final change. That attendance is the highest at St. James' Park so far this season, by the way.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

We talk about dictating play and Leeds haven't done that in this half, especially in midfield. They've defended, defended, defended. Shelvey has controlled things in the middle and that's what Leeds needed to do.

Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Shelvey's free kick goes up and out.
