Woman and girl sexually assaulted in Norton

A teenage girl has been sexually assaulted in Norton near Malton and police have released a CCTV image of a man they'd like to speak to.

The 17-year-old girl was touched inappropriately by a man as she walked towards a taxi rank on Commercial Street late last Monday.

He also inappropriately touched a 19-year-old woman who was walking with the girl.

The girl and the woman continued walking towards the taxi rank and saw the man enter the Star Pizza takeaway.

Tribute to Summer Wine actor Peter Sallis who has died

Peter Sallis has died at the age of 96, his agent has announced.

Mr Sallis played Norman "Cleggy" Clegg in Last of the Summer Wine from its first episode in 1973 until the series concluded in 2010 and was the voice of Wallace in Wallace and Gromit.

His role as the flat-capped philosopher made him the longest-serving cast member of the much-loved series.

His agent confirmed he died peacefully with his family by his side.

Leeds has highest rise in new voters

An area of Leeds has seen the biggest increase in people registering to vote the country.

The size of Leeds North West's electorate has jumped by 16% according to the Press Association.

Nationally more than a million voters have been added to the electoral roll ahead the general election, a total of 46.9 million people are eligible to vote on polling day

Leeds North West encompasses Headingley which is an area that a lot of students live in, many have been encouraged to register for this election.

Caravans seized for going up Sutton Bank

Two caravans have been seized by North Yorkshire Police after they were driven up Sutton Bank.

Caravans are banned from the route, because of the steep gradient and hairpin bend - and an alternative route is clearly signposted.

Officers who stopped the motorists found that neither driver had the correct licence to tow caravans in the first place.

Last of the Summer Wine actor Peter Sallis, who was also famous as the voice of Wallace in Wallace and Gromit, has died peacefully with his family by his side, his agents have announced.

Have you seen Christopher Mulligan?

Police are continuing to appeal for information to help trace missing Christopher Mulligan. He's been missing for almost two weeks.

Officers believe the 26-year-old may have been in the Hebden Bridge area on Thursday, 25 May, the day he was reported missing from home. 

He was last seen wearing black trainers, grey tracksuit bottoms and a grey hoody with red lettering across the chest.  

Det Insp Craig Lord, of Calderdale CID, said: "We know Christopher has previously travelled to Rochdale and Burnley, and believe he has links there."

Travel update: Delays on the rails

Rush hour train services look like they'll be facing delays this afternoon after a tree has fallen on the line in Mytholmroyd.

The advice is that if your train is running through the station, you're going to be delayed or have a cancelled train journey.

National Rail say that they expect problems until 17:15 and that trains between Manchester Victoria, Rochdale and Leeds will be affected.

Betting shops join forces to crackdown on anti-social behaviour

Unruly customers in bookmakers' shops are set to be banned from all betting shops in Sheffield in a new crackdown.

Police say that from today they've launched "Bet Watch" to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour in the city centre, particularly Fitzalan Square.

South Yorkshire Police has joined up with several bookmaker chains; Betfred, Ladbrokes Coral and William Hill, who say that they've seen "significant issues with nuisance and disorder."

The force says that if one bookmaker reports a problem with a person, their details will be shared with other betting firms around the area.

Many of these individuals have been barred from one betting company but continue to go into another causing antisocial behaviour and nuisance."

Visitors to Bempton Cliffs on the Yorkshire coast are being asked to help with a unique conservation project.

The RSPB wants people to submit photos of Puffins for scientific research.

It's to help discover what Puffins are eating and how much.

Road closures ahead of Leeds triathlon

Here's a bit of advanced warning for you, this weekend the Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon is taking place in Leeds.

Some of the world's top triathletes and thousands of spectators are expected to come to the city for the Leeds stage of the 2017 ITU World Triathlon Series.

There will be some road closures around Roundhay Park on Saturday between 05:00 and 14:00.

On Sunday, road closures and changes to public transport will be in effect in Leeds city centre as well as Roundhay, Oakwood, Harehills, Moortown, Meanwood, Headingley and Burley.

Charity urges crackdown on pop-up brothels

A campaign has been launched to urge people to give information on "pop-up brothels" in Yorkshire.

Crimestoppers says it's launching the appeal as it triesto put a stop to women being used as sex slaves. They say that some suffer "abuse in the most inhumane conditions".

According to the charity the brothels are often privately rented flats or houses which may only be used as a brothel for a short time.

They say that even budget hotels or holiday properties can be used. They add that the women could be from Eastern European countries, Thai and Nigerian.

People who run these brothels within our communities think they can get away with it, and have no limits as to what they will do to their victims."

South Yorkshire police boss 'satisfied' with terror police numbers

The South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner says he's "satisfied' that an adequate number" of officers are in place to handle a terrorist incident in the county.

Dr Alan Billings also said there needed to be an "intelligent conversation" with the public about where police should be placed.

He added that it wasn't just about having officers on the street, but that unseen intelligence-gathering staff played a vital part in preventing an attack like the one in London on Saturday.

Seven people were killed when three men drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and launched a knife attack in Borough Market.

Huntsman to face trial over lewd hunt protest video

A councillor who is accused of making lewd comments to a hunt protestor has appeared in court.

Former Breckland councillor Charles Carter pleaded not guilty at Scarborough Magistrates' Court to charges of hunting a wild animal with dogs and of using threatening, abusive, insulting words and behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

A confrontation took place at Duggleby in North Yorkshire in January when he was riding with the Middleton Hunt, which is based near Malton and which covers a large area of North and East Yorkshire.

Following the incident, Mr Carter was suspended by the council, who later accepted his resignation.

Charles Carter will go on trial at York Magistrates' Court on 9 October.

Man left with serious head injury after punch

A man has been left with a serious head injury after being punched at a pub in Cleckheaton.

Police have only just released details of the attack, which happened on 8 April at the Commercial Hotel, on Bradford Road . 

The man was punched on the chin by another man and knocked unconscious onto the floor. The man who punched him then ran off.

He suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Pinderfields Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Police say they're looking for a man in his mid 20s with short dark hair which is slightly curly.

Police 'disgusted' over condition of dogs

Police officers say they're "disgusted" with what they found when they were called to a house where there were "concerns" for a dog.

Officers say they were called to help RSPCA officers who needed to get inside a house in Wakefield.

They took two dogs away from the house "due to their poor health".

According to West Yorkshire Police, the owner is being interviewed under neglect offences.

Leeds civic building to be lit in red, white and blue

Leeds' civic buildings across the city are flying their flags at half-mast today and will be lit up in red, white and blue tonight as a mark of respect for the victims of the London terror attack at the weekend.

Three attackers killed seven people and injured 48 on Saturday night.

Prime Minister Theresa May said victims included a "number of nationalities", saying it was "an attack on the free world".

Eleven people are being held after police raids in Barking on Sunday. One of the properties is believed to be the home of one of the attackers.

Police investigating an armed robbery at a shop in Rotherham hope more witnesses will come forward following the release of these CCTV images.

It happened at around 20:00 on Saturday 27 May, when three men carrying crowbars and a sledgehammer went into Heron Foods on Doncaster Road in East Dene.

They threatened staff and stole a large amount of cash and food stamps, before driving off in a dark grey Audi A7.

No one was hurt, but employees were left frightened and distressed.

Damage was also caused to the shop.

Inquest into schoolboy death ajourned

An inquest into the death of an 11-year-old boy from Bradford who was found hanged has been adjourned this morning after new evidence emerged.

Asad Khan was discovered by his mother on 28 September last year.

New evidence seen by the family's solicitor suggests that children at Asad's school had been playing a choking game in the weeks before his death.

The inquest will now be heard next month.

Two seriously injured after motorway crash

Two people are still in hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the M1 in Yorkshire at the weekend.

It happened on Saturday lunchtime on the northbound carriageway between junctions 45 and 46. 

The crash involved a Vauxhall Zafira, whose passenger and driver were both badly injured, and a Vauxhall Vivaro.

The driver of the Vivaro stopped at the scene. Police say they want witnesses to the crash to come forward.

The death of a woman in her 80s in Pontefract last week is now being treated as "non-suspicious" by police.
