Leeds United player donates season tickets to children's ward

Today was a special day for the young football fans who are currently spending time on the children's ward at Leeds General Infirmary.

Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson stopped by for a visit, and donated two seasons tickets to the ward for the children to use.

The 26-year-old Swedish international used his own money to pay for the two tickets, with the intention that each week a different family can come and watch the team play at Elland Road.

Jansson explained to BBC Radio Leeds what led him to make the gesture:

"When I was a kid, the biggest day during the week for me was the day I got to watch my team play. I hope, because of this these children can have the same feeling on Saturdays. It's a small thing for me to do, but I hope it makes a big difference."

A new voice recognition app is allowing children with speech impediments to find their voice.

VocaTempo is a collaboration between technology company Therapy Box, the University of Sheffield and Barnsley Hospital.

It enables a computer to be trained to recognise a child's speech patterns and turn them into clear words.

From prime time TV, to the FA Cup preliminary round

With just 37 weeks until the final in May, it's about time we saw some action in this season's FA Cup.

For 320 team, the competition starts on Saturday, in the preliminary round - with just the small matter of 13 wins needed for a trip to Wembley .

One West Yorkshire team in action this weekend boasts in its ranks a player who's familiar with appearing at Wembley.

Not stadium, though. Arena.

X Factor singer and 2014 I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! runner-up, Jake Quickenden, is set to turn out for eighth-tier Osserr Town in their match at Sheffield FC.

As for his 'celebrity status', the 28-year-old is not expecting any special treatment when the whistle blows:

"It doesn't matter if I'm walking out on the pitch in front of 10 people or 100. I know I'm going to get stick and there's going to be a big meaty defender dishing out a couple of cheeky elbows. It's OK though, I can look after myself."

A better life on the coast?: Scarborough clamp-down on anti-social behaviour

A scheme's been launched in Scarborough to tackle anti-social behaviour.

Operation Culture aims to improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

Among the behaviour being targeted is street drinking, the use of psychoactive substances, and people who relieve themselves in public.

As a result there'll be more police officers present in the town, to deter those causing disruption.

Officers will base their patrols on community received intelligence, and take robust action against perpetrators of anti-social behaviour."

Calls for child abuse debate following MP's front bench resignation

Cabinet minister Sajid Javid has called for an "honest open debate" about child abuse after Rotherham MP Sarah Champion quit her role on the Labour front bench over an article on the issue.

Ms Champion resigned from her role as shadow equalities minister and apologised for her "extremely poor choice of words" after an article she wrote in the Sun caused widespread controversy.

Her decision to step down has been questioned by Mr Javid, who claimed on twitter that she had been forced out by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Yorkshire and Humber UKIP MEP Jane Collins also voiced her opinion.

She told TalkRadio that she believed Labour had not "learned its lesson about looking after its constituents rather than looking after its vote."

More of Yorkshire's restaurants have made it into the pages of the Good Food Guide.

A restaurant in Leeds is in the guide's top fifty for the first time.

The Man Behind The Curtain, which has a Michelin star, is number fifty on the list.

Nine Yorkshire venues are making their debut, including Vice and Virtue in Leeds and Epicure Bar & Kitchen in Huddersfield.

The Good Food Guide was first published in 1951 listing “600 places throughout Britain where you can rely on a good meal at a reasonable price”.

It now lists 1,235 entries based on anonymous inspections.

CCTV released after Sheffield supermarket robberies

Police investigating a series of Sheffield supermarket robberies have released a CCTV image of a man they'd like to speak to.

Two of the robberies were at Sainsbury's on Mortimer Street on the 24 July and 12 August.

A third was at the Co-op on Gleadless Road on 13 August, while the last one took place last night at Tesco Express on Sharrow Lane.

Long prison sentence for Wakefield rapist

A man from The Shutt, Horbury, Wakefield has been sentenced to more than ten years behind bars after admitting raping and assaulting a woman.

Lennox Selby, 25, was sentenced to ten and a half years at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty on the first day of his trial. undefined

Selby admitted an offence of rape, sexual assault and common assault against a female victim, which all took place earlier this year.

Following the sentencing, West Yorkshire Police said they're "pleased with the substantial custodial sentence" given to Selby which "reflects the seriousness of his offending".

It had been in doubt, after engine issues grounded most of the historic aircraft which make up the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Organisers say the fly-past is subject to weather conditions - as it usually would be - but Saturday's forecast is good.

Watch: Tributes paid by family of Leeds teenager

The family of Irfan Wahid have been paid tribute to him, after a 17-year-old boy was today convicted of his manslaughter.

Irfan, 16, was stabbed chest during a fight in the Harehills area of Leeds in February.

The defendant was cleared of murder at Leeds Crown Court, but will be sentenced for the killing in September.
