More North Yorkshire police to get mental health training

A trial to give specialist mental health training to over two hundred North Yorkshire Police officers has been so successful that the force is to train more people. It means that they can now understand and deal with anyone with a mental health issue.

The trial was run with the University of York who developed the training package. It was delivered by mental health teams at Tees,Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust.

Deputy Chief Consable Lisa Winward
North Yorkshire Police

The force's Deputy Chief Constable Lisa Winward says the project has been valuable and the training allows them to help provide a better service to people in distress.

The survey results suggest that there was a positive change in police officers' knowledge, attitudes and confidence in responding to incidents involving individuals with mental health problems.

There have also been delays at A&E departments - and some patients due to go home haven't been able to be discharged.

It's not clear how many of the trust's hospitals or patients were affected. The Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust said the issue was caused by a failure in a key piece of IT network hardware and that the problem was not a cyber attack.

We are now focussed on addressing the backlog of patients waiting to be seen and I am extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused to many patients and their families.”
