M62 latest: Motorway closed 'into this evening'

The M62 is likely to remain closed into this evening according to Highways England.

The agency says there are now wind speeds of up to 90mph and that they've kept the road closed "for the safety of drivers".

Highways England say the snow has now been cleared from the M62 but they are still spreading salt to keep it free from ice so it can open as soon as winds drop below 60 mph.

They also revealed that a gap was cut in the barrier yesterday evening so that cars could turn around and continue their journeys.

We’d urge drivers to avoid travelling this evening if at all possible as the diversion routes for the motorway are also very busy”

Warning over thin ice on ponds and lakes

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) has warned people to be careful near frozen lakes or ponds this weekend.

Thin ice
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service

Fire Chiefs say thin ice can be very dangerous and if anyone were to fall into freezing water it would be a life-threatening situation.

Cold water shock is a natural human response and causes people to panic and gasp for air but then take in water instead.

WYFRS says even good swimmers can get into difficulty.

We would like to remind the people of West Yorkshire about the perils of frozen ponds and lakes and the immediate debilitating effect on the body of falling into cold water"

These pictures have just been tweeted by a West Yorkshire motorway policeman from the A65 last night:

They really show the kind of conditions the police, Highways England and mountain rescue teams were trying to deal with.

PC Martin Willis said they were battling 95 mph winds as they tried to move snow to free motorists.

M62 latest: Follow diversions or 'don't travel'

This was the scene on the A640 from Huddersfield to Newhay a little earlier - at the equivalent of J21 of the M62:

Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team

Members of the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team (HVMRT) have been out helping stranded motorists after the road was completely blocked by snow.

The HVMRT says people's sat navs have been directing them up there and is warning people to "travel west via alternative routes - or not at all".

M62 latest: Pregnant woman stuck on coach for nine hours

A pregnant woman was stranded in a coach for nine hours on the M62 near Rochdale in winds of up to 90mph, it's emerged.

She was one of 60 people stuck on a coach trying to get to Leeds.

Meanwhile, one woman in Milnrow put up five people in her home while others were sent to a rescue centre.

M62 latest: Wind speeds of 80mph on motorway

Wind speeds of 80mph have been recorded this afternoon on the M62, which is why it remains closed, according to Highways England.

The motorway is closed eastbound between J20-J22 and westbound between J24-J21.

Highways England crews, along with the police and Army, are still working to clear the remaining stranded HGVs.

The agency says the M62 is likely to remain closed "until at least this evening".

'M62 horror story over' - Commuter's 19-hour journey home

If you think your commute home in the snow was bad last night, spare a thought for Leeds resident Sahrah Khan.

Her expected hour-long commute home from Manchester turned into a 19-hour marathon – including 10 hours stranded on the M62.

Ms Khan told BBC News that she left work at 14:00 in a positive mood, boosted by the fact her in-car sat nav suggested her journey would be shorter than usual.

"Next thing I know, it’s got dark and colder and I’m stranded in the worst traffic jam of my entire life," she said.

Police eventually came to the rescue in the early hours of the morning, helping Sahrah and other stranded drivers turn around and reach shelter at a nearby service station.

"I don’t think anyone slept much, but it was lovely and warm and the food was great," she said.

As soon as it started to get light, Ms Khan drove to Rochdale railway station, left her car, and caught the train back to Pudsey in Leeds. She finally arrived home at 10:00.

"I’ve had a shower and am now, finally, going to get some sleep...before I go and pick up my car," she told BBC News.

M62 latest: About 3,500 vehicles stranded

About 3,500 vehicles were stuck on the M62 last night due to the bad weather, police say.

During a press conference given by Greater Manchester Police, Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts said: "People need to adhere to 'Road Closed' signs."

"People who don't do so are putting themselves at risk. Check the advice from the Highways England website and Twitter feed".

He also reinforced the advice not travel across the Pennines by road unless "absolutely essential".

BreakingMore than 200 motorists spent the night on motorway

More than 200 motorists spent the night on the M62 due to the severe weather, police have revealed.

At one point, 3,500 vehicles were trapped yesterday evening as snow, ice and high winds brought the motorway to a standstill between Rochdale and Huddersfield.

Snow and bitterly cold weather causing travel disruption

Disruption continues for people travelling between Yorkshire and Manchester this afternoon due to the severe weather.

Cancellations and delays continue on the Hope Valley rail line between Sheffield and Stockport.

On the roads the Snake Pass and Woodhead Pass through the Peak District are completely closed in both directions.

The Highways Agency in Yorkshire has shared some images of conditions in the High Peak which continue to be bleak.

'Avoid M62, don't use sat navs' - Police

Motorists in West Yorkshire are being warned by police not to include the M62 in their travel plans.

Greg Walker

The motorway is currently closed in both directions between J24 and J21 due to high winds and Greater Manchester Police say it's set to stay shut "indefinitely".

Diversionary routes are busy and there are "significant traffic delays" on those roads, police say.

Officers are advising motorists to avoid the area, to only follow the marked diversion route and not to use sat navs.

Kirklees gritters 'not taking requests'

It does finally appear that weather conditions are improving slightly across West Yorkshire.

It looks as though Kirklees' gritters can now concentrate a bit on the side roads.

But that doesn't mean they'll go just anywhere:

Greater Manchester Police

Greater Manchester Police has announced the motorway will be closed "indefinitely" between junction 20 at Rochdale and junction 24, Huddersfield.

Posting on Twitter, Matt Stewart said: "I was at junction 21 - no-one knows anything on there.

"It's an absolute shambles. I went to the top of a hill and it looks clear of snow as far as I can see."

Police have also warned motorists to "adhere to all road closure signs" as people have driven past them and then got stuck in snow.

Community hall opens for M62 stranded

A community centre near Rochdale has become an emergency shelter helping hundreds of motorists trapped in the snow on the M62 motorway between Manchester and Yorkshire.

Community Hall

Local residents opened up Butterworth Hall in Milnrow overnight to make tea and toast for people stranded when the M62 motorway closed.

Rochdale councillor Irene Davidson was one of those who turned out to help.

She told BBC Breakfast that volunteers climbed up the motorway embankment to offer people in their cars food, shelter and a bed for the night:

I'd say we’ve fed well over 250 people now and we've got more coming in. They are so grateful. People have been sending me messages from all over the country – it’s been absolutely wonderful."
