The Labour MP led a debate in Westminster Hall on stop and search techniques used on black, Asian and minority ethnic people.

Writing for Politics Home yesterday, she said: "Whilst accepting that stop and search powers are important in helping the police fight and prevent crime; when used unjustly against innocent people they are hugely damaging to police and community relations."

Black people were six times more likely to be stopped by the police than white people, according to figures from 2017.

Listen: Hundreds of Yorkshire shops close in three years

More than 1,000 high street shops have closed in the Yorkshire and the Humber region in the last three years, new figures show.

The statistics, compiled by accountancy firm Price Waterhouse Cooper and the Local Data Company, show the region has suffered the largest decline of anywhere outside of London.

Sheffield was the worst affected area in Yorkshire and the Humber, with Hull, and Barnsley also seeing a drop.

Huddersfield has also been hit hard, according to the report, but David Whittle, from Peter's department store in the town, says despite the new findings there is still hope for the future:

Denim might not be the first thing you'd think of as the basis for an artwork, but that's exactly what one Huddersfield man is using for his portraits.

When 34-year-old Ian Berry cleared out the wardrobe at his mother's house he found a pile of old jeans that needed to be sorted.

Most people would take them to their nearest charity shop, but Ian, formerly known as Denimu, instead shaped them into portraits.

Berry wants to show his work in the north of England, bringing a touch of what he has shown in sell-out shows in London and Sweden and museums and galleries in the United States.

"I'd love to exhibit in Huddersfield but I want it to be the right project. I want to reach people who wouldn't normally go to an art gallery, to make an impact," he says.
