'No injuries' to staff or inmates after prison fires

Here's what the Ministry of Justice has had to say about those fires at Gartree Prison.

"Staff at HMP Gartree quickly responded to extinguish two very small cell fires over the weekend," a Prison Service spokesperson said. 

"No staff or prisoners were injured, there was no damage to either cell, and there was no wider disruption to the establishment."

We've got to make city 'attractive' to new GPs, deputy mayor says

Deputy City Mayor Rory Palmer has said it is important new GPs are aware what Leicester can offer them. 

"We're a city on the national and international map," he said. 

"We've got a housing market that compared to other parts of the country is within reach, we've got schools that are improving and we've got great transport links.

"We've got to package all that up, so we can sell all that to newly qualified doctors."

Two arrested on suspicion of murder after De Montfort House death

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a man in Leicester. 

The 24 year old was found by officers this morning at De Montfort House on Oxford Street. 

A post-mortem examination has yet to take place.

The judge paid tribute to Steven McKinnon after sentencing three men for his manslaughter.

He said: “His death was a tragic loss to the community around him. That loss is of course nothing compared to the loss to his family.

“He was a loving and devoted husband, brother and father. The void left in his family can never be filled. Nothing this court can do will turn back time or bring him back."

Peacekeeper 'paid ultimate price'

Police said Mr McKinnon had tried to "calm" the situation after his stepson was attacked at the Durham Ox in June.

Det Ch Insp Natalee Wignall said: "Steve was punched and knocked to the ground where the three men continued to hit and kick him as he tried to defend himself.

"He managed to get back on his feet but was punched again, resulting in him falling and hitting his head. Sadly he never regained consciousness."

"Steve tried to keep the peace that night and ended up paying the ultimate price."

Three jailed for killing man outside pub

Three man have been jailed for killing a man who stepped in to defend his stepson during a row outside a pub in Leicester.

Steven McKinnon, 44, died in hospital two days after he and his stepson were set upon at the Durham Ox in June.

Eugene Bell was jailed for ten years for manslaughter. Phillip Merry and Gurdev Sangha were jailed for eight years for manslaughter and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Phil Knight, the Chairman of Anstey Community Library, has said they are no longer just a "traditional" home for books. 

"What we've tried to do is move away from just being a library and into a community hub," he said. 

"We've looked particularly at trying to develop community activities either to give us rental income or for the benefit of the community."

Volunteers given more time to save Barwell library

Volunteers looking to take over Barwell Library have been given more time by Leicestershire County Council to save it from closing. 

Last year the authority invited community groups to come forward to take over a number of libraries.

Most of them are now being run by community groups but Barwell was facing closure because volunteers weren't able to come up with a viable business plan
