Peter Pritchard got in touch on our Facebook page after reading about dogs frightening deers at Bradgate Park.

He wrote: "The point every one is missing here is that the deer see any dog as a wolf, whether it is on a lead or not, under control or not, therefore a source of stress to the prey animal that deer are."

The red deer population story has generated plenty of chatter online.

Paul Jones on Facebook writes: "Forget the strict control bit.

Dogs should be on a lead or owners told to leave the park. Time for the rangers to man up and be a lot stricter.

"Make sure plenty of dog bins are available and used. Sensible and responsible dog owners will suffer if the idiots are not policed.

Yes they have to go to Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge in May, but forget the clubs they will play and look at their teams and their league position.

Manchester United are ordinary and Chelsea are poor, while Leicester are the best team in the league and have been all season.

Concern over low numbers of park deer

Signs at Bradgate Park
BBC

We count the deer in the autumn before the rut and in the spring before the new season’s young are born. We have just carried out the spring count and it is clear that we have far fewer Red Deer calves than we should have. It seems that, as well as 30 of last year’s calves dying as a result of being chased, many of the pregnant females have suffered miscarriages. We have around a third of the number of calves that we should have.”

Peter TyldesleyDirector, Bradgate Park Trust
