How DNA convicted Colin Pitchfork

Calum McKenzie

BBC Local Live

The police investigation initially led to the wrong man, although he falsely confessed to one of the killings, and it was only thanks to the development of DNA fingerprinting that Pitchfork was eventually caught.

With DNA profiling, originally used in paternity disputes, experts proved a 17-year-old boy's innocence before carrying out a mass screening of 5,000 men.

Even then, Pitchfork evaded justice by persuading a colleague to take the test for him, going so far as to replace his passport photograph.

But he was overheard boasting about the case in the pub and was eventually arrested. His DNA profile ultimately led to his guilty plea and life sentence.

Colin Pitchfork: Killer might 'pick up where he left off'

Calum McKenzie

BBC Local Live

The mother of one of Pitchfork's victims, Barbara Ashworth, has spoken about any possible parole for her daughter's killer.

"I think life should mean life because obviously if they are in prison, they aren't put in a situation where they can commit those sort of crimes again.

"Once he's out again in the community, it would be quite easy for him to think 'Oh, I'll pick up where I left off'."

Colin Pitchfork: Parole Board has to be sure there's 'no risk'

Calum McKenzie

BBC Local Live

Pitchfork was originally given a life sentence with a minimum term of 30 years.

However, in 2009 the Court of Appeal reduced the minimum term to 28 years, to take into account the "exceptional progress" he had made in custody.

Before sanctioning a prisoner's release, the Parole Board has to be sure he or she no longer poses a risk to the public.

Colin Pitchfork: Killer has shown 'no remorse'

Calum McKenzie

BBC Local Live

Kath Eastwood, the mother of one of Colin pitchfork's victims, spoke to BBC Inside Out in September about how she felt about him possibly being released on parole.

BBC

"He isn't a man, he can't be to do what he did," she said. "To have his baby boy in the back of his car, to stop his car and then kill my Lindy, get back into his car, and take the baby to bed after what he had done.

"For a man to act that way just after he had killed a girl - there's a missing link inside his head. There's something wrong permanently.

"There's no feeling there at all, no remorse."

'Bubbling' City Ground should help Tigers

Jeremy Guscott has also been touching upon how important home country advantage could be to Leicester Tigers.

"It is a bit of myth that French sides don't travel well," the former England international said.

"They have been the strongest teams in this tournament in recent years and the influx of top foreign players into the Top 14 has helped shake that unwanted tradition.

"But it is less than 30 miles from Welford Road to the City Ground in Nottingham where the match is being played and I expect it to be a bubbling atmosphere."

"The Leicester-Racing semi-final will be tight and tactical rather than the fast and fluid encounter Wasps v Saracens promises to be," he predicts.

"World Cup-winning New Zealand fly-half Dan Carter leads a galaxy of stars in the Racing line-up, but I think if Burns keeps up the accuracy of his goal-kicking Leicester will have enough to turn over the French side and set up and all English final."
