Simpson will still complete unpaid work

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

Simpson's punishment is for throttling his ex-girlfriend Stephanie Ward in December 2014.

He was ordered to do 300 hours of community work but only managed 145 before having it changed to a curfew.

Polly Neate, chief executive of Women's Aid, said "Although Danny Simpson's curfew has been quashed, it is important that he is still being held to account to complete the remainder of his original sentence.

"Perpetrators of domestic violence must face the consequences of their actions, even if they are high profile, and it is vital that the judicial system is consistent in sending a strong message that abuse will not be tolerated."

Community 'no longer fearful'

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

As the gangs attempted to get revenge, police say they caused residents a "great deal of alarm and distress".

Tensions in the area were raised and police had to increase patrols to reassure locals.

Since May 2015 police have arrested more than 70 people with 53 of them being charged with a variety of offences.

PC Wilson said: “These individuals have been causing unrest within the local community for several years and on this particular occasion they were intending to cause further harm.

“Since the operation began the local community have commented on how things have changed and that they are no longer fearful."

It all started in July 2015 when there was an assault in the area, which led to the defendants arming themselves with weapons like metal poles, wooden sticks, hockey stick and a brick to try and get revenge.
