Your views on Ivanhoe line

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

But if you're from the area and have a view you like to share you can let me know by email, Facebook or Twitter.

Line would need thousands more potential passengers

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

The railway line goes from Leicester to Burton passing through areas like Coalville and Ashby.

The report found the number of potential passengers would need to dramatically increase for the service to be able to operate without subsidy.

At the moment there are 60,000 households along the line. That would have to increase by up to an additional 206,000 houses. There are no plans to increase housing by this much.

Line wouldn't make enough money

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

At the moment the Ivanhoe Line operates as a freight line with a speed limit of 45mph. Some parts of the track are limited to 20mph.

If the line was made suitable for passengers the county council funded report says it would generate £340,000 of economic benefit per year.

It would however cost big bucks - it's thought an investment of about £100m is needed.

Line would be 'poor value for money'

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

The report for the county council found it would cost up to £175m to make the line suitable for passenger trains.

It found the line would then cost up to £4m per year to run.

The authority says it would be unable to attract Government funding for the line claiming it would be "poor value for money" under Department for Transport criteria.

It also says there is no realistic prospect that Network Rail or HS2 would fund it.
