Council explains decision on Magna Park

Harborough District Council says it is of the "utmost importance" it makes sure all national planning policy is taken into account when considering planning applications. 

Cllr Jo Brodrick says: "For this reason, this planning application will be taken back to committee to ensure any decision reached is robust and in line with current planning policy.”

The other two planning applications are set to be considered by the council’s planning committee later in the year.

Medieval village could halt Magna Park expansion

The council says it now needs to reconsider the application following a clarification of the law in a recent High Court case.

The law relates to the nearby Bittesby Deserted Medieval Village, a national and statutorily protected heritage site and Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM).

Let me refresh your mind with the Magna Park story...

IDI Gazeley’s submitted three planning applications for new warehouses at the Lutterworth site. The firm said this would provide 9,000 new jobs in the area.

The size of all three warehouses combined is six million sq ft (550,000 sq m). 

At the start of the year the council met and approved the first of the three applications at a meeting that lasted over four hours.

There's been an interesting development in plans to expand Magna Park in Lutterworth.

In January Harborough District Council approved controversial plans to build a huge new warehouse.

Cyclist in life-threatening condition

A 25-year-old woman is in hospital in a life-threatening condition after the bike she was riding collided with a car.

It happened early this morning at the crossing on Great Central Way in Leicester.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving.    

Firework market at risk of going underground

A businessman in Leicester is warning that if the government decides to ban the sale of fireworks to the public then sales will go underground.

MPs are debating the subject today after an e-petition was set up calling for tighter restrictions.

Leicester to celebrate Queen's birthday in Jubilee Square

The city council is expecting hundreds of people to join in with the Queen's 90th birthday celebrations in Leicester on Sunday.

There'll be a live link to the celebrations in London set up in Jubilee Square along with birthday cake and other activities.

Muhammad Ali inspired Leicester boxer

Over the weekend we heard the sad news that Boxing legend Muhammad Ali had died.

Yesterday BBC Radio Leicester spoke to Leicester fighter Rendall Munroe - known as The Boxing Binman - about Ali's legacy.

The motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital  while the driver was taken by ambulance.

Leicester man questioned over pensioner's death

The Leicester man being questioned on suspicion of murdering a man in Suffolk is thought to be 61-year-old Steve Paxman.

The BBC understands he's the son-in-law of Peter Stuart, whose body was found in Weybread on Friday night. Peter Stuart's wife Sylvia is still missing.

Police are also still hunting another man from Thurrock in Essex. His car was found abandoned in a residential area in Dover.

Bags of clothes deliberately burnt

It's thought someone deliberately set fire to 30 bags of shredded clothing on Layton Road in Leicester last night.

The fire service was called just before midnight. The fire was in a locked area outside a building and caused some damage to the wall.

Police check for speeding on crash hotspot

Police spent an hour yesterday checking drivers' speed on Standard Hill in Coalville.

Last month an elderly man died in a crash on the road.

Out of 75 motorists. they will be speaking to eight about their speed.

A Leicestershire police officer has been in court this morning to plead not guilty to a charge of burglary. 

PC Neville Thompson from Syston is accused of stealing £60 in cash and a set of car keys from a garage on 25 March 2016.

Another suspect in Suffolk murder

Police investigating the murder of a pensioner in Suffolk have named another suspect - 42-year-old Ali Qazimaj from Essex (pictured).

Officers want to speak to him after 75-year-old Peter Stuart was found dead near his home on Friday. His wife Sylvia remains missing.

BBC Radio Leicester has been talking about Jamie Vardy's potential move with Ian Bason from the Leicester City Foxes Supporters' Trust.

He says: "Maybe the difference with Vardy being slightly older is he may see this as his last chance to go to a 'bigger club' whereas Mahrez and Kante are several years younger.

"Maybe a year in the Champions League first, having that experience, would be better for their careers."
