Twiddlemuffs 'calm patients'

The LRI has about 35,000 frail elderly patients going into its emergency department each year. Staff say it can be daunting and upsetting for them, particularly if they have dementia.

Ward sister Esther Hyde said: “The Twiddlemuffs are designed to aid stimulation, comfort and relaxation and just from observing the patients using them, they appear to be calmer."

They're multi-coloured knitted sleeves used by dementia patients to help keep their hands busy. They often have ribbons, buttons and zips.

Sgt Ollie Webb, from Leicestershire Police, said: "The victims have all been out in the city and returning home from a night out and they've all been walking home alone." 

"That is the key point - they've been walking home alone after a night out." 

Dean calls for better mental health services

The Dean of Leicester says people with mental health problems are "falling through the cracks" as there's not enough help in the area.

Cops looking into 10 'linked' city robberies

I've just come off the phone to Leicestershire Police who have confirmed they are investigating 10 "particularly brutal" robberies in the West End area of Leicester. 

Officers believe they are linked and are encouraging people in the area to be extra vigilant.

Man charged with sex offences

Police have charged a teenager with sex offences relating to four victims.

The 18-year-old, from Westfields in Barlestone, has been charged with causing and inciting indecent images to be sent to him, grooming, possession of indecent images and sexual touching.

He will appear at Leicester Crown Court next month.

The Very Reverend David Monteith said: "For those of us on the ground, unless you've got a very accurate map of the service provision out there then we can point people in the direction but they just go into nothingness and then trust begins to erode.

"I don't have a problem with churches and mosques and temples and other local organisations picking up some of this but it need to be in a co-ordinated way."

The pair are accused of not letting her leave Luke Harlow's flat in Ibstock last November.

Man 'shot at' in Coalville

A man has told police he was shot at in Coalville last night.

The 20-year-old said there’d been an argument between him and another man who shot at him before driving away.

It happened on Bardon Road at about 22:00. Police say enquiries are being carried out into the circumstances of the alleged incident.

I've just spoken to a member of the church about this- he said they don't know how much money was inside the box but it is emptied regularly.

He sounded very sad when he told me the box was smashed off the wall, saying it was a sad reflection of the times.

Fewer people buying local fruit

Sandra Herbert runs a "pick your own" farm at Whetstone Pastures near Blaby and says she's lost much of this year's crop because of the bad weather.

She says it's not just the weather putting people off picking their own fruit: "The customers don't come, particularly if it's in the ground, because they can get it so much easier from the shelf.

"We have to have people that value locally grown fruit and sadly not many people do."
