Guide dog refusal driver could be prosecuted

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

Drivers are legally required to accept bookings from passengers with assistance dogs unless the driver has a medical exemption certificate. We’re not aware of any taxi drivers in Leicester to which this applies. We’ve been in contact with ADT taxis, which have suspended the driver and are considering what further action to take. We will be contacting the customer to see whether they are prepared to make a statement, to support us in prosecuting the driver. We will also consider whether there are sufficient grounds to revoke the driver's licence.

Taxi driver sacked over guide dog row

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

We are deeply ashamed of the conduct of this Leicester City Council licensed driver, and he clearly broke the law after not accepting a booking we gave him on religious grounds, and has been dispensed with, as well as reported to the council. The driver is now free to work for any firm he chooses. Our policy is clear, we do not discriminate.

In the video you can hear the taxi driver refusing to have a dog in his car because of his religion.

Charles says: "I have no hatred towards the driver and his religion and I would respect that if the law wasn't there but the law is there to help people be more integrated into the community."

Taxi refusal not a 'one-off'

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

The man wanting the taxi was 22-year-old student Charles Bloch. He's only had his guide dog Carlo since January.

We've been in touch with him and he said: "It's extremely frustrating but it's a very common thing.

"You wouldn't believe it in 2016 but although everyone is aware about the law it happens a lot.

"Luckily I'm thick-skinned so didn't get too upset about it but it really affects some people when they get refusals and some say they don't want a guide dog anymore because of the problems it causes, or they don't go out anymore."

"I know we've already lost out - there was a bid to repatriate some of the World War I poppies. The paint was made here in Coalville, we should have had a display but nobody wanted to fund it."

More murals still to come

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

These three latest murals, celebrating Leicester winning the Premier League, have been commissioned by Leicester City Council.

They want the art to be a permanent reminder of the emotion and pride felt during last season.

They're going to do six in total with the next one being on Lineker Street. I guess that's quite appropriate.
