East Midlands Trains (EMT) has said sorry for the disruption caused to rail services following the bridge collapse. 

"I just want to apologise and thank them (our passengers) for their good humour today," EMT's customer experience director Andrew Conroy said.

Bridge collapse sounded 'like a massive earthquake'

He added that "there was a sound like a massive earthquake – it was quite nerve wracking."

"We're looking at days rather than weeks for trains though."

Eye witnesses have described seeing Network Rail contractors drilling on the Grove Lane bridge at Barrow upon Soar immediately before it partly collapsed.

They also say the work only began after the last trains had passed.

It's understood locally that a Nottingham-Leicester train passed under the bridge at Barrow upon Soar about twenty minutes before it partially collapsed leaving debris all over the track.

Used everyday by school children (my sons), students (my daughter), commuters (my husband) I was shocked at the state of it a few weeks ago - at least now it might be repaired properly instead of just patched up........"
