Your questions: Where was the Wigston Magna workhouse?

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

One of our curious readers has been in touch using Your Questions to ask: "Where was the Wigston Magna workhouse?"

A great question because it's been tricky to find the answer.

In a book called Workhouses of the Midlands by Peter Higginbotham it confirms there was a workhouse in Wigston and in 1777 there were 32 inmates.

The workhouse was open until 1837 when a bigger workhouse was built in Enderby (image below) to house all the inmates within the Blaby Poor Law Union, including Wigston Magna.

But where was the Wigston Magna workhouse?

Well, I've been in touch with the Greater Wigston Historical Society and chairman Mike Forryan said: "We know little about the workhouse other than names of people who resided there."

Mr Forryan said there was a lane on Bulls Head Street called "Workhouse Lane"  - the lane went down the side of the Bulls Head Inn which was opposite Mowsley End.

It's thought this could have been where the workhouse was however there could have been other buildings rented for the purpose.

This area of Wigston was demolished by the council to build the by-pass - the society doesn't have any photographs of the building.

Jason Owen said: "This is criminal, especially with houses being in such demand and so many new houses being built."

Barrie Hawkins said: "We complain there is a house shortage yet there is hundreds of houses lying to rot. It makes it harder for young couples to get a house due to high rent and high property rate. Yet these houses could be done up and lived in but instead we build these new estates. We don't need new houses old ones are easy to do up."

BBL Trophy final: Plymouth Raiders 58-91 Leicester Riders

BBC Sport

Leicester Riders retained the BBL Trophy with a 91-58 victory over the Plymouth Raiders in a one-sided final.

Leicester went 20 points ahead in the first quarter and Plymouth never came within 12 points after that as they trailed 47-26 at half-time...

Leicester coach Rob Paternostro: "I could see it in the guys' eyes - they were eager to play after two weeks off.

"You saw that in the way we came out. We set the tone early with some great play on both ends of the floor. This is a group of guys that don't complain about [how many] minutes or shots they're getting, they just want to win."

Watch: Empty homes in Leicester

BBC Inside Out

Every area has its empty houses but here in Leicester there are more than 4,000 with around a quarter of them being unused for at least 18 months.

Sarah Thrower is a mother of two and is renting a "tiny little house" in the city - she said they are "climbing over each other".

She's hoping to get on the council homing register so she can get a bigger house. She finds it especially frustrating when there are so many empty homes in the city.

In Leicester they have an Empty Homes Team who are bringing about 200 empty homes back into use every year.
