Man sexually assaulted woman as she slept on coach

Calum McKenzie

BBC Local Live

A man has been jailed for four years for sexually assaulting a woman as she slept on a coach.

Admir Senaj
Leicestershire Police

Admir Senaj, 29, attacked the woman on a coach journey from Nottingham to London as they travelled down the M1.

The woman, who was sat next to Senaj, woke up to find him assaulting her.

Senaj was jailed today after being found guilty of assault by penetration at Leicester Crown Court.

Dan Robberts, from Leicestershire Police, said: "Senaj preyed on a young woman while she was in a vulnerable state and was brazen enough to do so surrounded by other people on a busy coach.

"He then fled the scene when he realised the police had been called.

"I hope the guilty verdict today will be some sort of closure for the victim."

It's hoped a closer relationship between Derby and Nottingham will benefit both cities.

The "Metro Strategy" was officially launched yesterday and the leaders of Derby City Council and Nottingham City Council hope it'll improve the region's standing on a global stage.

Ranjit Banwait, Derby's council leader, says the authority will be looking at various ways to improve links between the two cities.

For years now we have been talking about the importance of devolution, the importance of councils working collaboratively together in these tough times. If you look at the two cities, they have unique identities with their own strengths. If we're going to compete in the national and international stage, it's better to do that together."

County council candidates at studio for election debate

Ian Skye

Presenter, BBC Radio Derby

In one week, Derbyshire residents will go to the polls for the county council elections.

Labour currently runs the authority and have done since 2013.

They've got a sizeable majority - 43 seats to the 18 seats held by the Tories and the three Liberal Democrat seats - but their opponents think that majority can be overturned.

Here's a little bit more information on each candidate (pictured left to right).

  • UKIP's Martin Fitzpatrick stood as an MP in Mid Derbyshire in 2015, and in 2010 ran against Nick Clegg. He's from Melbourne and is the chairman of UKIP in Derbyshire
  • The Green Party's Sue MacFarlane also ran for Parliament in Mid Derbyshire in 2015. She's a singing tutor from Belper
  • Conservative Barry Lewis has been the leader of the opposition since 2014. He co-owns a vineyard near Wessington, where he lives
  • Liberal Democrat David Lomax was head of special needs at New Mills School, where he taught for 26 years. He's from Whaley Bridge. In 2010 he stood against George Osborne in the general election
  • Labour's Anne Western has led Derbyshire County Council since 2013. She's from Barlborough and last year received a CBE from the Queen for services to local government
