Leicester Tigers boss Matt O'Connor has said Graham Kitchener's surgery on a cracked eye socket went better than expected.

Kitchener (pictured), who picked up the injury in the defeat against Northampton Saints, is expected to be back in time for the start of Tigers' Champions Cup campaign next month.

In other injury news, Brendon O'Connor and Adam Thompstone could be available to face Exeter on Saturday, but the trip to Reading to face London Irish a week later looks a more likely return date.

Hooker George McGuigan is back in training, but no date has been set for his return.

Man stabbed in neck in Calverton

Two 16-year-old boys have been questioned after a man was stabbed in the neck during an attempted robbery.

Police said three 18-year-olds were allegedly targeted in Main Street in Calverton at about 23:00 on Friday 15 September.

The two boys were arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and have been released while investigations continue. Details of the attack have only just been made public.

Ex-cop calls for greater scrutiny of taser usage

A former Leicestershire Police officer is calling for "greater transparency" over the use of tasers.

The force currently has 80 officers carrying tasers and is planning to increase the number up to 150.

Nick Glynn, who spent 30 years with the force, believes as the number of officers with taser training increases, the greater the scrutiny should be.

Mr Glynn said: "As the roll out of this equipment increases, so should the scrutiny and oversight, not only inside Leicestershire Police...but also externally from independent people to have some transparency."

Man fined for wearing military uniform without permission

A Derby man has been fined £500 after pleading guilty to wearing a military uniform without permission while fundraising.

Christopher Webster, 43, donned the outfit in Staffordshire while asking the public for donations for Shoebox for Heroes, a non-charity organisation that sent packages to troops serving abroad.

Mr Webster, of Sunny Grove in Chaddesden, pleaded guilty to contravening section 2 of the Uniforms Act 1894, which puts restrictions on who can wear military uniform.

He told magistrates he had not meant to upset anyone by wearing the outfit and had done so "to show his respect for fallen heroes".

The district judge said: "I have a very uneasy feeling about [Webster's] activities and about the way that this organisation has been set up."

Those plans for a music and comedy venue (see 15:10) to replace the Assembly Rooms in Derby have sparked plenty of debate on Facebook.

Barbara Beer writes: "Sounds good to me, it's about time Derby had something like this again to attract big artists to our City, instead of having to travel to other places to see them x"

But Helena Roper adds: "Not sure we need a new assembly rooms, the velodrome and quad seem to be coping with the entertainment."

Labour MP John Mann has said that Jeremy Corbyn would get the UK out of the European Union much quicker than Theresa May and the Conservatives.

In an interview with the BBC's Daily Politics at the Labour Conference in Brighton, Mr Mann, the MP for Bassetlaw, added that his party had been "much clearer" on Brexit than the Conservatives.

The Conservative Party Conference starts on Sunday in Manchester.

Derby's Assembly Rooms are set to be replaced by this - a live music and comedy venue costing £32m.

A report outlines how "cultural compromises" have had to be made to make the finances work.

It won't have specialist theatre facilities.

The Assembly Rooms, which had previously staged live music and events like the British Open Snooker, closed following a fire in 2014.

Police say they're growing concerned for the safety of a 50-year-old Derbyshire man who's gone missing.

New Leicestershire ambulance service promises improvement

East Midlands Today

The new provider of non-emergency patient transport in Leicestershire will meet local people tonight to assure them the service will improve after it takes charge.

The current service - Arriva Transport Solutions - has faced regular criticism about delays getting patients to and from hospital.

Thames Ambulance Service Limited will start a five-year contract in October.

The force added that it still wanted to hear from people who may have information about the death, who have not yet come forward.

Man charged over East Midlands burglary spree

A Nottingham man has been charged with carrying out 10 burglaries across the East Midlands in the first six months of this year.

One of the burglaries allegedly involved violence. He's also been charged with four counts of handling stolen goods and one theft.

Football: Musa gets Nigeria call up despite lack of game time

Labour 'needs to find election candidates early'

Labour should install general election candidates as soon as possible in seats that they are targeting, a Nottingham city councillor has said.

The party are said to be looking at overturning Conservative majorities in a number of seats across Nottinghamshire, including Broxtowe (863 majority), Sherwood (5,198) and Rushcliffe (8,010).

Councillor Steve Battlemuch, who represents Wollaton, said: "When you have got a candidate in place you have got some name recognition.

"You can go out and say that this person is challenging for the seat."

The smallest majority in Nottinghamshire is Labour-held Ashfield, won by Gloria De Piero by 441 votes from the Conservatives.

Man endures seven months of pain after Shrovetide Football accident

A 69-year-old man who dislocated his shoulder at the start of this year's Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football has called on organisers to increase the number of stewards at future events.

David Phillips, from Dove Holes, is due to have surgery on the shoulder today after seven months of pain since the annual event in February.

He told BBC Radio Derby: "Half a second into the game and - bang - I was on the car park ground.

"I didn't see them coming. Some of the lads put their arms down to reach me to pull me up but they couldn't reach so I had to save myself.

"As I was lying on the ground, I thought 'this is it, then - you're staring at death here'."

The Shrovetide committee said it did not want to comment.
