That equates to an annual increase of £70 for an average Band D property.

Byron Rhodes, the deputy leader of the Conservative run council, said: "Asking residents to pay more is not ideal.

"But at a time when we face reducing much-valued services such as roads, libraries and support for vulnerable families, we have to seize opportunities to generate valuable income."

The proposals will be discussed by the council cabinet next Friday, with a final decision expected on 21 February.

There's been plenty of discussion on Facebook about the plans to spend £225m on the A38 in Derby.

Mark Lucas said: "About time for Kingsway can’t take much more traffic."

Many people had similar thoughts to Peter Harrison who said: "At long last this should have been done in the 1970's when the A38 was created, it was part of the plan."

Wendy Lynas said: "I remember my Dad many many years ago; commenting on the short sightedness of the road infrastructure in Derbyshire. This was debated many years ago by Derbyshire County Council."

A teenage drug dealer who stabbed a man in Grantham five times with a "rambo-style knife" has been sent to a Young Offenders' Institution for 10 years.

Exo Bendo
Lincolnshire Police

Lincoln Crown Court heard the stabbing happened after a fight broke out over a deal to sell crack cocaine.

Victim Kane Nagg intervened when drug user Kerry Askew accused Exo Bendo (pictured) and his drug dealer partner of short-changing her for the drug.

Jury nearing deliberation point in suitcase murder trial

Caroline Lowbridge

BBC News at Leicester Crown Court

Jurors have heard nearly all of the evidence in the trial of a man who dumped his ex-wife's body in a suitcase after allegedly murdering her.

Kiran Daudia
Leicestershire Police

Ashwin Daudia claims Kiran Daudia (pictured) died after he "lost control" at their home in Lyme Road, Leicester, but the prosecution say he deliberately killed her.

This morning the jury heard evidence from a solicitor called Dipak Acharya relating to the sale of Ashwin and Kiran Daudia's house, which they had been living in together despite divorcing in 2014.

Mr Daudia had been due to move out on the day his wife died - 16 January 2017 - but he had not done so when his wife returned from work.

The jury at Leicester Crown Court will hear one more agreed fact - evidence that is agreed by both sides - tomorrow morning.

The prosecution and defence are expected to make their closing speeches to the jury at Leicester Crown Court tomorrow ahead of deliberations.
