Stormy Stan reaches 1,000 call outs

One of the capital's longest-serving

RNLI crew members has become the first in London to have responded to more than 1,000 lifeboat emergency call-outs.

Stan Todd, who is also known as Stormy Stan, has rescued 295 people and saved 47 lives during a career spanning 34 years. The full-time helmsman at London's Tower lifeboat station first joined Brighton RNLI as a volunteer in August 1980.

Christmas day travel

Here's the travel information for Christmas Day:

  • There will be no service on National Rail, London Underground, London Overground, Tramlink, DLR or London Bus Services
  • Heathrow Express will run a shuttle service between airport terminals only
  • From Christmas Day until 1 January inclusive, the Central London Congestion Charge will be suspended.

Race registration to open

More than 25,000 people will pedalling from city to sea in 2015 as part of the

British Heart Foundation's London to Brighton Bike Ride.

Britain's busiest airport, Heathrow, is expecting 87,782 departing and 77,719 arriving passengers to pass through the terminals

Two squatters remain in building

Police officers are speaking to the pair at Cavell House, in Charing Cross Road, after being asked by bailiffs to prevent a breach of the peace. Charring Cross Road was closed briefly, the police said.

Man dies after Lambeth crash

A 52-year-old man has died after being hit by a van in south east London.

Police officers were called to reports of a collision yesterday at 16:30 on Lambeth High Street, in Lambeth. The driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, he has been bailed to a date in late March.

Teenage girl assaulted in row

A teenage girl has been left with a fractured cheekbone after she was assaulted in west London.

The victim's mother was trying to park her car on Blacks Road in Hammersmith at 13:30 on Sunday when a row broke out with two women in another vehicle.

During the argument, a 14-year-old girl was hit in the face by one of the suspects.

Police are appealing for any witnesses.
