'Caribbean' temperatures set for London next week

BBC Weather

A blast of Caribbean hot air could push UK temperatures over that of Menorca, Majorca and Sardinia next week.

The air mass is set to continue the unseasonable warmth of the last week as parts of the UK prepare for highs of 17C on Monday, following a spell of mild weather.

The cloud of hot air is making its way over the Atlantic Ocean from Florida and parts of the Caribbean, and is expected to reach the British Isles over the weekend, the Met Office said.

London,  Aberdeen and Wattisham  in Suffolk are all tipped as likely locations for the highest temperatures, with the east of the country broadly enjoying the best of the warmth.

Small firms warn over business rates hike

Small firms in London could be forced to close when a sharp rise in business rates is introduced in April, industry leaders have warned.

It comes as the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) said 74% of small businesses in London cited the imminent rise in rates as their biggest concern.

The rise follows the first revaluation of commercial values since 2010. The FSB urged the chancellor to raise the threshold for business rate relief in next month's Budget.

The survey of 129 businesses found four in 10 expected their rates bill to increase by more than 20%, the FSB said.

Simon Pitkeathley, chief executive of Camden Town Unlimited Business Improvement District (CTU), said: "The new business rates will drive firms out of London, force some businesses to cut staff or close down altogether."

How business rates are calculated

Business rates are calculated using the value of property but also take into account things like the value of equipment and the sector the business operates in.

They are the third biggest outgoing for many small businesses after rent and staff costs.

A ceremony is taking place this morning in Hammersmith to honour one of the borough's "most courageous residents" who received the Victoria Cross for gallantry during WWI.

Lance Sergeant Frederick Palmer's company fell victim to machine gun fire but he managed to gather six comrades, cut through barbed wire and rushed the enemy trench in Courcelette in northern France.

Despite an incessant barrage of bombs and rifle grenades, he held the captured trench for three hours.

He was eventually blown off his feet by a bomb but got up again to defend the trench.

Representatives from the armed forces are joining to pay tribute to Frederick Palmer on the 100th anniversary of the battle.

Mayor Mercy Umeh will lead the event in Shepherds Bush to dedicate a memorial paving stone.

Lance Sergeant Palmer died in 1955 and his Victoria Cross is on display at the Tower of London.
