Alcohol-related hospital admissions drop in borough of Wigan

Fewer people in Wigan are being taken into hospital with alcohol-related conditions, according to Public Health England figures.


The number of under-18s being admitted for health problems caused by drinking has almost halved in the past five years.

There have also been significant drops in the number of men and women across all ages who need hospital treatment for conditions related to alcohol.

GMP investigating Tory election expenses

Greater Manchester Police is among eight forces investigating whether Conservative MPs filed election expenses illegally after the 2015 General Election, the BBC understands.

The allegations centre around failing to register the accommodation costs of party activists who were involved in the "battle bus" operation.  

The party has blamed an "administrative error".  

A Conservative spokesman said the party had already brought the error to the attention of the Electoral Commission.

A local councillor has condemned Ken Livingstone for the collapse of the Jewish Labour vote in Prestwich.

Livingstone has been accused by Labour's Alan Quinn of giving "grotesque offence" with his comments about Hitler.    

Labour lost two seats in Bury, and only held onto a third seat by 19 votes.

Mr Livingstone said it was others in Labour who made an issue of it.

Labour loses total control of Manchester City Council

Labour has lost full control of Manchester City Council after the Liberal Democrats won a seat.

The Lib Dems' John Leech won the Didsbury West, ending Labour's 100% control of the authority. Labour had held all 96 seats since 2014.

Its candidate Barnaby Lane was beaten by 702 votes.

Mr Leech, who was an MP for Manchester Withington before he lost his seat in the 2015 General Election, took 53% of the vote.

Man caught gesturing at speed camera jailed over bogus information

A company director who was caught gesturing at a speed camera has been jailed after providing bogus information in relation to 67 speeding offences.

Manchester-based Speedy Sofas Ltd director Waqas Chaudhry, 47, of Wilmslow, Cheshire, admitted providing false information when prosecution notices were sent out. 

Chaudhry or his family members were caught speeding 67 times between 2003 and 2014, Greater Manchester Police said. He was jailed for 18 months and also disqualified from driving for 21 months at Manchester Crown Court.     

New Salford Mayor wants a "better and fairer" city

Labour's Paul Dennett has been elected as the new mayor of Salford.

Dennett won 28,332 votes in the second round of voting after beating Conservative candidate Robin Garrido.

He told BBC Radio Manchester one of his first priorities is to deal with the government's austerity measures.

Bolton legend has Alzheimer's, says daughter

Former Bolton and England striker Frank Worthington has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, his daughter says.

Worthington, 67, made 84 appearances for Wanderers between 1977 and 1979, scoring 35 goals.

"He was diagnosed several years ago and has been holding it off with positive thinking and football," wrote Kim-Malou Worthington in a post on Facebook.

Mayor Dennett said he wants a "better and fairer" city.

Iain Stewart was elected as the first Mayor of Salford back in 2012 - he wasn't standing for re-election.

Labour keeps overwhelming control of Manchester City Council

Labour has kept its overwhelming control of Manchester City Council - it won 31 of the 32 seats up for grabs - but full Labour rule has been broken.

The Lib Dems managed to pick up one ward with the former MP John Leech winning in Didsbury West. He's the only opposition councillor in the city. 

Other local results still to come include those for Warrington Borough Council and Cheshire's Police and Crime Commissioner.

Travel: Accident causes queues on M6

One lane is closed and traffic is queuing on the M6 northbound between junction 17 for Sandbach and junction 18 for Middlewich because of an accident.

Labour have retained control of Salford City Council and its political makeup remains the same - that's 51 Labour, eight Conservative and one independent.

A total of 50,256 votes were cast and 30% of the electorate turned out to vote.

In the election for Salford Mayor, they've moved to include second preferences after no-one got 50% of the vote. The result will be announced soon.

Campaign to raise money for Peak District paths

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to raise money to help repair footpaths and walkways in the Peak District.

The damage is thought to be a result of booming visitor numbers. 

The Mend Our Mountains campaign is backed by the Didsbury-based British Mountaineering Council amongst others.

Man charged over sexual assault on teenagers

A man has been charged with eight counts of sexual assault in Bolton.

The charges against the 63-year-old man from Egerton relate to four female victims aged between 15 and 18. The offences took place between 31 May 2012 and 12 July 2015.

He has been bailed to appear before Bolton Magistrates Court on 7 June.

Bolton's Khan, 29, is moving up two weights to challenge his Mexican rival for the WBC middleweight title - if he won, he would be only the third ex-light-welterweight world champion to win a middleweight world title.

Judge rules teenager in Rochdale must give up baby

A teenager who became pregnant after being placed into council care must give up her baby, a family court judge in Leeds has ruled.  

The girl, now 17, had been taken into care in Rochdale over fears she was vulnerable to sexual exploitation.

She lived with the child's father, an illegal immigrant in his 20s, after starting a relationship in 2014.
