A 16th Century building partially destroyed by fire has had a new temporary roof lifted into place.

The blaze at Wythenshawe Hall in Manchester on 15 March caused extensive roof and upper floor damage.

Since the fire, an emergency tarpaulin has been used to protect the building during structural and archaeological work.

Joetta Shumba: Man sentenced after 160mph M62 death crash

A man has been jailed for eight years and eight months after causing the death of a young mum whilst driving at more than 160mph on the M62 near Eccles.

Martin Grant 30, of Jacey Road, Birmingham earlier pleaded guilty to causing the death of 25-year-old Joetta Shumba by dangerous driving and drink driving. 

He was also given a six-year driving ban, which will only begin on the day he is eventually released from prison.

Apartment prize offered in Salford

A bestselling business author is giving away an investment property in Salford, in protest against the buy-to-let tax. 

Manchester-born multi millionaire Marco Robinson has launched a competition - and the prize is a fully furnished two-bed apartment in Eccles worth £110,000. 

Mr Robinson, who owns more than 100 properties all over the world, believes that the recent 3% hike on stamp duty for buy-to-let properties will "crush entrepreneurial activity in the housing market".

A man is due to be sentenced after earlier pleading guilty to causing a woman's death by dangerous driving in a crash on the M62 in Greater Manchester.

Joetta Shumba, 25, died in January when the Audi she was travelling in collided with a lorry which subsequently overturned near the Eccles Interchange.

The car's driver, 30-year-old Martin Grant of Jacey Road, Birmingham, admitted the charge on 6 April at Manchester Crown Court.

A 50-year-old man from Cheshire has died in a crash in Gwynedd, Wales.

The collision happened on the A496 between Dolgellau and Bontddu at about 15:00 BST on Sunday and involved one Yamaha motorcycle and a number of other vehicles.

Homelessness charter drawn up

A new charter to help tackle the issue of homelessness in Manchester will be officially handed over to the city's bishop today. 

Rough sleeper

The latest count carried out by the city council found there were 70 people sleeping rough - double the previous year's count. 

The new charter, which will be used by council and businesses, has been written by the local charity Mustard Tree and people who have experienced sleeping on the streets.

It's been a fantastic night for Greater Manchester at the Bafta Television awards with Bolton's Peter Kay taking home two accolades - Best Male Comedy and Best Scripted Comedy for Car Share.

Investigation over burning homeless camp tent

Police have cordoned off part of London Road in Manchester City centre while they investigate a burnt-out tent on a homeless camp.

Nobody was inside at the time but the fire is being treated as suspicious, police said.
