Patients with rare form of bone marrow cancer are to take part in a new research study in Manchester to try to find new ways to treat the condition.

Myeloma currently affects more than 17,000 people in the UK, and more than 1,000 people in the Greater Manchester area, Macmillan Cancer Support charity said.

A study led by a consultant at Manchester Royal Infirmary will investigate how to help frailer patients who often become intolerant to chemotherapy.

Project director appointed for new £110m Manchester arts venue

A project director has been appointed for a £110m arts venue being developed at the site of the former Granada TV studios in Manchester.

Jenny Baxter, who currently works for the BBC at MediaCityUK, said she is "thrilled" to lead the Factory Manchester project, which is set to open in 2019.  

Factory Manchester will be a large-scale, flexible arts venue capable of transforming from a seated theatre space to a standing environment suitable for a wide range of art forms, the city council has said.

Van driver taken to hospital after M6 crash

A man has been airlifted to hospital after a crash between a van and a bus on the M6 in Cheshire.

The van driver was on the northbound carriageway near Holmes Chapel at about 13:40 when the collision occurred.

It is not thought any of the bus passengers were injured.

Proposals to create a £10m city centre park in Manchester have been approved by the council.

The "Medieval Quarter" will see the area around the Cathedral and Chethams opened up and a new park will be built on what was Victoria Street, at the end of Deansgate. 

The public space will include willow trees, a public square and a walkway next to the River Irwell.

Drug driving tests reveal results 'within eight minutes'

Officers can find out whether a motorist is drug driving within eight minutes of a saliva swab being taken, Cheshire Police said.

The force made 561 arrests between March 2015 and April 2016, the third highest after the Metropolitan Police and Greater Manchester Police.

A man has died after being hit by a lorry in Bury town centre.

The man, believed to be in his 70s, suffered serious injuries after he was stuck in Knowsley Street at about 10:55.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Motorists have been warned of delays travelling in and out of the town centre.

A month-long crackdown to tackle drink and drug drivers in Greater Manchester starts today.

It follows the news more than 1,000 arrests are made for drug driving by the Greater Manchester and Cheshire police forces in the past year - the highest figures outside London.

New legislation was brought in covering legal driving limits for 17 illegal and prescription drugs in March last year.

New single trust should run Manchester's hospitals, report says

Three of Manchester's biggest hospitals should be merged into one city-wide NHS Trust, a review has recommended.

Manchester Royal Infirmary, North Manchester General and Wythenshawe Hospital would be run by a single NHS trust if the merger goes ahead

The trusts that run Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe and North Manchester General hospitals have been asked to "consider how [a merger] can best be achieved".    

Sir Mike Deegan, chief executive of Central Manchester University Hospitals Foundation Trust said he was "strongly supportive" of entering the discussions about how to create a single organisation.

Thousands arrested for drug driving

There were almost 8,000 arrests last year for drug driving with Greater Manchester and Cheshire having the highest number outside London, figures obtained by BBC Radio 5 live suggest.

It led to 315 drivers being charged in Greater Manchester and 322 in Cheshire.

Wigan Warriors Super League club probe gym 'fracas'

An investigation into an alleged fracas involving two Wigan Warriors players has been launched by the club.

The inquiry comes after police were called to a disturbance between two men outside a gym on Chapel Lane, Wigan shortly before 20:45 BST on Friday.

Two men entered the gym, said Greater Manchester Police, with one apparently causing damage.

No arrests were made, but the Super League club say it was conducting its own inquiries.
