Public urged to avoid Wigan hospital A&E due to surge in demand

People are being urged to avoid going to Wigan hospital A&E unless it is a serious and life-threatening emergency due to a surge in demand.

Those with conditions not considered serious can expect waits of more than four hours, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust said.

Mary Fleming, director of Operations at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, said: "Our message is simple – if you have a serious urgent medical emergency, go to A&E or dial 999."

Vandals warned over damaged water hydrants

Vandals who damaged at least seven water hydrants around Greater Manchester within 24 hours could be putting lives at risk, a senior firefighter has warned.

Damian O'Rourke, of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, said their engines carry only a limited amount of water to tackle a fire.

"When this water is used up we rely on the nearest available hydrant to continue extinguishing the fire safely," he said.

"We want to remind people that vandalising hydrants could put the local community at unnecessary risk.”

Club doctor settles claim against Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho

Former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro has settled a constructive dismissal case against the club and its former manager Jose Mourinho, who has since moved to Old Trafford.

Ms Carneiro claimed sex discrimination and harassment against Mr Mourinho, and constructive dismissal against the Stamford Bridge club.  

The dispute has now been settled for an undisclosed sum of money.

Search for family of man found dead at Rochdale flat

A coroner is trying to find the relatives of a 45-year-old man who died at his home in Rochdale.

Artur Kempa was found at his flat in Falinge on Sunday. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Heywood coroner's office on 0161 856 8885.

'Hero' van driver helps rescue people from Stockport flat blaze

A van driver who reversed his vehicle under a window to rescue two people from a fire at a Stockport flat has been hailed a hero.

London Road, Hazel Grove

The blaze broke out at the property in London Road, Hazel Grove, at about 04:45, trapping the two men in an upstairs living room.

Nick Hince, a station manager from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We believe a heroic van driver helped to rescue two men from the property after spotting smoke when he was driving past.

"He reversed his van underneath the window allowing the trapped men to jump onto the van and called 999."

Family pay tribute to motorcyclist who died in South Reddish collision

The family of a motorcyclist who died in a collision in Greater Manchester have paid tribute to him.

Junction of Reddish Road and Broughton Road, South Reddish

Jack Henderson, 20, was involved in a collision with two cars and a van on Reddish Road at the junction of Broughton Road, South Reddish, at about 21:00 on Friday and later died in hospital.

His family said he was a "cheeky, fun-loving character who was respected and liked by everyone he met".

Man charged over attempted kidnap of woman in Fallowfield

A man has been charged over the attempted kidnap of a 32-year-old woman in Fallowfield.

Hart Road, Fallowfield

The woman was walking along Hart Road between 05:10 and 05:20 on Saturday when a man approached her before she managed to escape.

A 46-year-old man, of no fixed address, has been charged with kidnap with intent to commit a sexual offence, threatening a person with a blade and theft.

He is due to appear before Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court on 5 July.

Vandals target at least seven water hydrants in Greater Manchester

At least seven water hydrants have been targeted by vandals within a 24-hour period in Greater Manchester, United Utilities has said.

Hydrants in Wenlock Way in Belle Vue, Rushlea Avenue in Salford and Ashover Avenue in West Gorton where among those damaged.

Record numbers of passengers use Manchester Metrolink

Record number of passengers have used Manchester Metrolink in the past year.


More than 34 million journeys were taken on the city's tram network - a 10% increase on the previous year.

The latest tram line to Manchester Airport opened in November 2014, with the nine-mile (14.5km) stretch covering 15 new stops in south Manchester.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was shot in the chest in Salford.

The 33-year-old man remains in a stable condition in hospital after the incident at about 21:25 on Saturday in Mill Hill, Little Hulton.

A woman, 39, and a 45-year-old man have also been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

Plans for a £1bn expansion of MediaCityUK are submitted

Plans for a £1bn expansion of MediaCityUK in Salford have been submitted to the local authority for approval.


Up to 10 new buildings could be created, the site's owners Peel Group said, with 1,800 apartments proposed, shops and leisure and a pedestrian promenade.

The plans are expected to be considered by Salford Council's planning committee in September.

Weather: Severe weather warning for east Cheshire

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy, thundery showers that will affect east Cheshire later. 


The showers could "turn locally torrential with the risk of hail".

A cyclist who found the man, aged between 65 to 75, thought he looked like he was having a rest, although it was bitterly cold and the rain was torrential around Dovestone Reservoir.

Saddleworth Moor

The Chew Track, which runs between two reservoirs, is steep. The dead man was positioned on his back perfectly in line with the slope and he was not wearing anything approaching the right clothing for the walk or the weather.

Man sought after attempted child abduction in Reddish

A man is being sought following an attempted abduction of a 14-year-old girl in Stockport.

Police have issued an image after the girl was followed as she walked along Dumbarton Road in Reddish between 15:00 and 16:00 on 25 May.

As she crossed a road, the man got out of the van and grabbed her by the shoulder and told her to "come with him". She kicked him and he ran off.

People are being asked to "chronicle the nation's missing history" by sharing details of key sites, including places in Greater Manchester.
