£90m Cheshire link road given council approval

Plans for a £90m link road around the town of Congleton have been approved by the local council.

The money will come from central government, Cheshire East Council and housing developers. 

The 3.5-mile road is set to open in 2018.

Nurse 'sorry' for missing details

A nurse who cared for a grandmother at the hospital where she died has apologised to the woman's family for failing to update her patient record.

Margaret Gleeson, 70, died two days after a routine hernia operation at Wigan's Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

Valerie Taylor told Bolton Coroner's Court she had "no excuse" for the failure in October 2015.

It led to an artificially low rating of Mrs Gleeson's health risk, the inquest heard.

Valerie Taylor was one of several medics questioned about omissions from patient notes during the second day of the inquest.

Further woman charged over images found at care home

A care worker has been charged in connection with images found at a care home in Middleton. 

A 23-year-old woman from Oldham is accused of four counts of ill-treating or wilfully neglecting an individual and is due to appear at Bury and Rochdale Magistrates Court on 1 July.

Earlier this month another care worker aged 19, from Middleton, was also charged with four counts of ill-treating or wilfully neglecting an individual and is also due in court on the same date.

Police said the charges follow a call the force received on 22 January about a number of images that had been taken by staff at the care home.

Health watchdog criticises Bolton care services

The standard of social care for elderly and disabled people in Bolton has been criticised by a health watchdog.

Bolton Healthwatch said the system in the town "is not fit for purpose" and has given a damning picture of home care services.

The report has detailed instances of vulnerable people being left in wet clothes, refused showers and having to cope with soiled bed sheets. 

Bolton Council said it takes the concerns extremely seriously and has pledged immediate action to rectify the situation.

Manchester man killed in Wales cliff plunge

man who died after his car plunged over a cliff in Wales has been named.

Dyfed-Powys Police were called to the scene at 19:50 BST on Friday after reports of a car going through a field and over the edge.

The body of 42-year-old Gary Chilton, from Manchester, was recovered from his car at the bottom of the cliff at Ty Gwyn Caravan Park in Ceredigion.

Two Salford squares are to be renamed in honour of the city’s twin towns.

The area in front of Swinton Gateway and the space outside the Lowry Hotel are to be named Lunen Square and Clermont-Ferrand Square respectively at the weekend.

Valerie Taylor was giving evidence at the inquest into Margaret Gleeson, 70, (pictured) who died in October 2015, two days after her hernia operation at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan.

She told Mrs Gleeson's family: "I didn't score a urine output.  And I've no excuse for that. I can only apologise wholeheartedly."

The failure led to an "early warning score", used by medics to establish the risk to a patient's health, showing as artificially low.  

The nurse was one of several medics questioned during the second day of the inquest at Bolton Coroner's Court.

A relic of a 13th Century Franciscan friar has arrived in Salford from a church in Italy.

The statue of St Anthony of Padua and a rib from the saint is at St John's Cathedral as part of a tour of Britain and Ireland.

It leaves Salford on Wednesday for the trip which includes Sheffield, Shrewsbury, Birmingham and London.

Police sss-stop man with snake

Two police officers in Salford found themselves carrying out an unusual sss-stop check while on patrol.

PCs Paul Fawcett and Jo Turner saw a man with a snake and asked what his was doing.

He said he was taking it to a local pet store as he could not look after it any more.

"This was not your average stop check," PC Fawcett said.

Gorton house blast investigation begins

An investigation into the cause of an explosion that destroyed part of a house in Manchester is under way.

A man was seriously injured following the blast at the property in Abbey Hey Lane, Gorton, yesterday.

Group manager Paul Etches, from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, said indications show there was a gas blast at the rear of the house.

Girl, 16, from Sale missing since Monday

A 16-year-old girl, from Sale, has been missing from home since Monday.

Tess Blandamer was last seen shortly after 10:00 in the Barkers Lane area of Sale.

A police spokesman said the force is becoming "increasingly concerned" for the teenager, who was last seen wearing black jeans, a green parker and was carrying a black rucksack.

Manchester council to discuss smaller general waste bin plan

Plans to introduce smaller bins for general waste to boost recycling will be discussed by Manchester City Council later.

The council is hoping to increase its recycling rates and save £2.4m a year on waste disposal by changing from the black bins with a 240-litre capacity to 140-litre grey bins.

The proposed change will be debated at the Neighbourhoods Scrutiny Committee meeting before a final decision is made by the council executive on 29 June.

Plans to cut about 285 firefighter jobs will increase the risk to the public, the head of Greater Manchester's fire authority has said.

Chairman David Acton said: "It puts people more at risk, it puts businesses at risk and there is no doubt it is a real challenge for us as a fire service."

The authority is trying to save £15m over the next four years and will discuss the proposals on Thursday.

Hundreds of online sex crimes against children in Greater Manchester, says NSPCC

More than 400 sex crimes committed against children in Greater Manchester in 2015-16 involved the internet, according to police data obtained by the NSPCC.

The NSPCC said 38 out of 44 police forces in England and Wales had recorded more than 3,000 sex crimes with an online element against children between April 2015 and March 2016.

This is the first year police have had to flag internet-related abuse.

The sexual offences included inciting children to take part in a sexual act, grooming victims before meeting them and live-streaming abuse.
