Football: Oldham and Wigan paired in League Cup draw

The draw for the first round of the EFL Cup has been made.

The most noticeable fixture for Greater Manchester clubs is Oldham's home tie against newly-promoted Championship club Wigan.

Other local fixtures include Blackpool v Bolton, Rochdale v Chesterfield and Burton v Bury.

Ties will be played week commencing 8 August.

Business leaders look to boost UK-India trade deals

Business leaders are meeting in Manchester to discuss how to increase trade between the UK and India.

The aim is to showcase opportunities for firms in both countries. 

The sectors which already benefit include media, life sciences, healthcare and higher education. 

According to the 2011 Census, there are more than 50,000 people of Indian origin living in Greater Manchester - and it is hoped business links will improve as a result.

Hospital denies weekend staffing levels contributed to woman's death

The hospital where a woman died following a routine hernia operation has denied weekend staffing levels contributed to her death.

Margaret Gleeson and family

Margaret Gleeson, 70, (pictured with her family) died at Wigan's Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in October 2015 as a result of a rare complication two days after surgery for a hernia problem.

In response to concerns raised at her inquest, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Foundation NHS said it did not believe her death was the result of a shortage of resources at weekends.

"The surgery was performed appropriately but, very sadly, Mrs Gleeson suffered an extremely rare complication which led to her condition deteriorating post-operatively."

A spokesman said the trust accepts the coroner's conclusion and findings.

A coroner has raised concerns about weekend staffing levels at a Wigan hospital after hearing how a grandmother died following a routine operation.

Margaret Gleeson

Recording that Margaret Gleeson, 70, died as a result of a rare complication, coroner Simon Jones ruled out neglect as a factor.

But he said he would be writing to express concerns after a senior surgeon raised issues about the safety of patients at weekends.

Mrs Gleeson died at Wigan's Royal Albert Edward Infirmary two days after a routine hernia operation.

Spain winger Nolito is a summer transfer target for Manchester City.


City will meet a £13.8m release clause in Nolito's Celta Vigo contract, which expires in 2018.

The 29-year-old, who is on duty with his country at Euro 2016, has yet to decide his future, with his former club Barcelona also interested in him.

Travel: Delays on M6 northbound in Cheshire

Public told 'not to approach' man missing man from Manchester hospital

People are being told "not to approach" a man who has been missing from a hospital in north Manchester for more than a fortnight.

Christian Bradley, 46, was last seen at North Manchester General Hospital's Park House mental health unit at about 11:15 on 7 June.

Insp Tim Rudd said: “We would ask that anybody who thinks they may have seen him, do not approach him or attempt to interact with him, please contact police.”

Cheshire museum shortlisted for National Lottery award

The Lion Salt Works Museum in Cheshire has been shortlisted for the Best Heritage Project in the 2016 National Lottery awards.

The Northwich museum is the only project in the North West to make the shortlist.

Lion Salt Works opened last June after a 30-year campaign to save the UK’s last open pan salt making site.

A four-year restoration transformed it from a dilapidated structure into a museum.

Helena Thurm, 25, from the Altrincham area, was struck by a Vauxhall Astra in Manchester Road shortly before 18:10. She died in hospital on Tuesday.

Helena's family said she was "a beautiful, kind, caring, intelligent and funny person" who was "at the threshold of adult life".
