North West MEP understands immigration concerns

North West Conservative MEP Sajjad Karim believes the EU Referendum shows immigration was a key issue to many Britons.

Mr Karim backed the Remain campaign but said: "It's quite clear that in many of our northern towns there are working class communities that have been affected by free movement of people for work.

"It's sent a very clear message that many of them have voted because of the immigration issues not having been addressed."

Business leaders accept Brexit result despite many of them having backed Remain

The chief executive of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce says the group will accept the outcome of the EU referendum despite backing the Remain campaign.

Man stabbed 20 times in Salford 'attempted murder'

A man has been stabbed more than 20 times by three men wearing balaclavas in an attack police are treating as attempted murder.

The men jumped from a car and attacked him as he was walking by the Citrus Way and Mango Place junction in Pendleton, Salford, at 23:15 on Thursday.

They stabbed the 23-year-old victim before getting back into the car which was driven away by a fourth person.

England and Sale Sharks rugby star Danny Cipriani has been found guilty of drinking and driving after his Mercedes crashed into a minicab following a night out.

Westminster Magistrates' Court heard the Wasps fly-half was so drunk his eyes were "glazed" after the smash on Imperial Road, Fulham on 1 June 2015.  

The 28-year-old was ordered to pay a total of £7,620 in fines and costs and banned from driving for 18 months.

In Rochdale, Oldham, Tameside and Wigan more than 60% voted to leave - a sign of the long-simmering frustration over immigration and its perceived impact on jobs.

Manchester, Stockport and Trafford came in for Remain but with an overall average of about 55%, Greater Manchester's Leave voters made a big contribution to the national result.

'Ghost of a tree' unveiled in Manchester park

Former Turner Prize nominee Anya Gallaccio's "ghost of a tree" has been unveiled in Manchester's Whitworth Park this morning.

The stainless steel work stands on the spot of the only tree that was taken down during the recent renovation of the Whitworth Gallery. 

Apparently, when Gallaccio heard about its demise - it had to be taken down as it was already dying - it sparked the idea for her work.

Greg Dyke: Effect of Brexit vote on football 'depends on exit terms'

In Greater Manchester, Manchester voted 60.4% to stay, followed by Trafford at 57.7% and Stockport at 52.3%.
