Piles of postcards for eight-year-old girl's fundraising challenge

Eight year-old Keira-Louise Arnold, whose dad died after losing his battle with cancer, has completed her 1,000 postcard challenge to raise funds for the hospice that cared for him.

Her grandmother promised to give her £100 to donate to Dr Kershaw's Hospice in Royton if she received 1,000 postcards by the end of June - and she has hit the target with postcards coming from as far as Australia and India. 

Two jailed over gun used in Salfod doorstep shooting

Two men have been jailed for transporting a gun that had been used to shoot a mother and her seven-year-old son on their doorstep.

Jayne Hickey and son Christian were shot when two men knocked at their front door in Salford last October.

The gun was linked to nine shootings in Liverpool between 2011 and 2014.

Aldair Warmington, 29, of no fixed address, and Christopher Hall, 46, of Little Hulton, were jailed for six and five years for firearm offences.

Football: Sir Alex Ferguson says Giggs has 'steel' to be a manager

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says it was time for Ryan Giggs to leave the club and that he has the "steel" to succeed in management.

Giggs, 42, ended a 29-year stay at United after new boss Jose Mourinho decided not to retain him on his staff.

Ferguson says long-time rival Mourinho was right to go with "his own man" - long-time assistant Rui Faria and told BBC Sport: "It is time Ryan stood on his own feet, got out there and accepted the challenge."

Teenager 'traumatised' after robbery by three balaclava-clad men

A man who was robbed by three men posing as delivery drivers in Lostock, near Bolton, has been left "completely traumatised".

The 19-year-old was approached by three men wearing balaclavas who were armed with hammers, police said.

The man was tied up with cable ties while his mouth and eyes were covered with tape.

The robbers then searched the house and stole cash.

A man has died and 10 people have been injured in a multi-vehicle accident near Rochdale which has caused huge tailbacks on the M62.

There is queuing traffic in both directions between junction 20 at Rochdale and junction 21 at Milnrow and westbound vehicles are being turned around. 

Congestion is stretching back to junction 18 at Simister Island and junction 23 at Huddersfield.

Police said the dead man was yet to be identified. A man and woman also suffered serious injuries.

Man stuck on M62 moves 'about a mile' in 50 minutes

Dom Busby, who's stuck westbound on the M62 following the fatal multi-vehicle accident, told BBC Radio Manchester:  "I have done - in the last 50 minutes - about a mile."

Two men sought after man's jaw broken in Bolton assault

Greater Manchester Police are searching for two men who fractured a man's jaw during an assault in Bolton in May.

The man was outside The Corner Club bar in the early hours of 22 May when a scuffle broke out and he suffered multiple facial injuries.

He later underwent surgery to have a metal plate wired to his jaw.

Motorway police hope to re-open eastbound M62 'soon'

North West Motorway Police say they hope to re-open the eastbound M62 at junction 21 soon following a fatal multi-vehicle accident five hours ago.

However, the westbound carriageway will remain closed.

Bolton road to be shut overnight for three months for resurfacing

St Peter's Way in Bolton is to be closed every night for three months to carry out resurfacing working.

Bolton Council said it will be shut weekday evenings from 4 July between 19:00 and 06:00 for 13 weeks to allow the work to take place.

In the daytime, the speed limit will be reduced to 30mph in both directions.

United defender ill with food poisoning

Manchester United say defender Chris Smalling has had food poisoning during his holiday which resulted in him fainting on Sunday.

Pictures appeared on social media showing the 26-year-old in hospital with his head and hand bandaged, prompting reports he'd been stung by a jellyfish. 

However United say the defender is now feeling fine.

A mountain rescue volunteer from Stockport has died during a call-out in the Peak District.

He collapsed on Saturday while making his way to a young Duke of Edinburgh walker who needed help.

Appeal for patience after fatal M62 accident

The Highways Agency has appealed to motorists for patience after a fatal multi-vehicle accident on the westbound M62 at Milnrow, in which a man died.

The agency said the eastbound carriageway remains closed from junction 20 and  is expected to remain closed into the early afternoon.

A man has died following a multi-vehicle accident on the M62 motorway, the ambulance service has said.

An air ambulance attended, with eight people treated at the scene and two others taken to Royal Oldham Hospital with minor injuries.

The crash near J21 Milnrow closed the M62 in both directions.

The motorway is closed in both directions at junction 21 at Milnrow because of the accident and debris on the road.

There are long delays expected and there is congestion back to junction 22 at Rishworth Moor and to junction 18 at Simister Island. 

Dig begins at Collyhurst Hall to uncover 'forgotten past'

Archaeologists from Salford University and volunteers are starting a dig at Collyhurst Hall to uncover its forgotten past - now buried beneath a playing field.

Historic documents suggest the hall once housed the Mosley family, an influential clan heavily involved in the history and economy of Manchester from the 17th Century onwards.

The hall was demolished at the end of the 19th Century, replaced by terraced housing, that was knocked down in the 1960s. 

The site is now beneath playing fields on Rochdale Road and Collyhurst Street.

A spectator at Wildboarclough motorcycle trials, near Macclesfield, is recovering after falling down a rocky ravine into water on Sunday.

Fire crews from Cheshire, who rescued the man, said he'd fallen around seven metres into a tributary to Cumberland Brook and was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

Comedian Steve Coogan's tribute to 'fantastic' Caroline Aherne

Comedian Steve Coogan has been paying tribute to writer and comedian Caroline Aherne who died of cancer at her home in Timperley at the weekend.

He told BBC Radio Manchester she was "at the heart" of the Manchester comedy scene and he recalled "so many funny memories of working with her."  

He added: "She felt like a sister to me. I remember when she was a secretary at the BBC in Manchester for a while and she used to say: 'I'd love to be on the telly like you'.

She left a "fantastic legacy" and proved you can be a creative success despite coming from a modest background, said Coogan.

"We need more people like her", he added.

Crash damage check driver hit by lorry

A 24-year-old woman has been killed after she was hit by a lorry on the motorway as she got out her car to inspect damage after a minor collision.

Greater Manchester Police said the woman's Ford Fiesta was involved in a "minor collision" on the M61 near Westhoughton at about 03:30 near junction five.

A police spokesman said it is thought she left her car which could not be moved "to check the damage". Drivers are being diverted from junction four northbound.   

Tributes to comedy writer and actress Caroline Aherne

Tributes are being paid to the comedy writer and actress Caroline Aherne who has died at the age of 52.

Aherne, star and writer of The Royle Family and The Mrs Merton Show, had suffered from cancer, her publicist said.

The actress said two years ago that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer, having previously had bladder and eye cancer.

She was also the narrator of Gogglebox and appeared in The Fast Show.
