Manchester mouse dropping takeaway fined £9,500

The owner of a takeaway in Manchester has been fined more than £9,500 after mice and rats droppings was found on the premises.

The health inspectors findings also included raw chicken stored incorrectly and a disconnected water supply that meant staff could not wash hands or equipment at Chicken Cottage in Rusholme.

Man hurt after off-road bike crashes with two cars

A man has been taken to hospital after a crash between an off-road bike and two cars in Wythenshawe. 

Junction of Moat Road and Hollyhedge Road

The man, 22, was travelling with another man on the off-road bike when the crash happened in Hollyhedge Road at about 16:15.

He suffered a head injury and a broken leg.

Headstones damaged in Wigan cemetery

Headstones on graves belonging to a child and a soldier were damaged by vandals in Wigan, police said.

They were targeted in the attack in Gidlow Cemetery in Standish, Wigan.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.

A man who was attacked by a police dog claims officers accused him of being a thief rather than offering help.

Dominic Pemberton has undergone two operations for his injuries

Dominic Pemberton alleges he was left for "a good hour" before he was taken to hospital after the attack by the Greater Manchester Police dog-in-training, outside a Lancashire hotel.

The 23-year-old was held on suspicion of going equipped to steal before being de-arrested and taken for treatment. GMP said an inquiry had begun, but did not comment on the officers' behaviour.

Travel: Tram suspended due to police incident

There is no service on Manchester Metrolink between Martinscroft and Crossacres due to a police incident at Benchill, which is on the Manchester Airport to Cornbrook line.

Paracetamol, toothpaste and hangover tablets are among a long list of medicines for minor ailments that will no longer be available for free on the NHS in East and West Cheshire.


Clinical commissioning groups in both areas want people to pay for over-the-counter remedies instead.

The change has already been made in Warrington where it was hoped £1m would be saved.

Six arrests after stabbing in the Northern Quarter

Six people have been arrested on suspicion of assault and affray after a man was stabbed in the Northern Quarter.

The man was found with a stab wound to his hand and another had been kicked in the head during a fight outside Bluu bar shortly after 23:00 yesterday.

Two 17-year-old boys, two men aged 18, and two others aged 19, 20, were arrested. Police are appealing for witnesses.

Greater Manchester Police has launched an internal investigation after a man was attacked by a police dog during a training exercise being held in Lancashire on Friday.

Dominic Pemberton had just parked his car outside Park Hall hotel when he says the dog escaped through a hole in the fence and attacked him. 

He has since had two operations at the Royal Preston Hospital.

Mr Pemberton was initially arrested on suspicion of going equipped to steal on Friday before he was de-arrested and taken to hospital for treatment, police said.  

The incident has been referred to the force's professional standards branch.

Manchester City sign first esports player

Manchester City have signed a new young player - but one who will never set foot on the pitch.

Instead 18-year-old Kieran "Kez" Brown joins the club as its first esports player.

He will represent the club at esports tournaments, playing popular computer game Fifa.

Man arrested after baby found in Wigan hospital toilets is bailed

A man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a newborn baby was discovered unconscious and abandoned in a Wigan hospital's toilets has been released on bail.

The accident and emergency unit at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary

The baby boy was found in the early hours of Wednesday in the accident and emergency unit at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary and was resuscitated by medical staff, police said.

The 31-year-old man who was arrested has been bailed until 19 July pending further inquiries.

The Manchester United midfielder, 31, was doubtful for the game in Marseille with a knee injury but Low said: "The injury is cured and he showed against Italy he's got the strength to play from the start."

Missing Leigh man's car found in Cumbria

A car belonging to a man missing from Manchester for eight months has been found in a car park in Cumbria.

Darren Merritt, 41, was last seen at his home in Leigh in November. 

Police found a Fiat Punto registered to Mr Merritt in the car park at Blea Tarn. They do not know how long it has been there.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Devolution deal transferring power for prisons and probation services signed

A deal has been signed to give Greater Manchester devolved powers over large parts of the criminal justice system.

Approaches to education in prisons, work with youth offenders, and offender management schemes will be decided at a local level rather than nationally.  

Greater Manchester is the first English region to gain such responsibilities. The move was first announced by Chancellor George Osborne in March's Budget.

Driver filmed 'playing Rubik's cube' on M61 near Bolton

This footage captures a woman appearing to use both hands to solve a Rubik’s Cube puzzle while driving on the M61.

Macauley Stephens, who filmed the woman on Friday, reported it to police via Twitter saying "@GMPCityCentremotorway games..Check this out! Dangerous."

Greater Manchester Police said "as a rule" it does not investigate reports it receives via social media.

Two women who were jogging in a park in Manchester have been sexually assaulted by a teenage boy.

Police believe the same boy, aged 14 or 15, attacked a 42-year-old woman in Alexandra Park at about 18:25 then targeted another, aged 27, at about 19:25 on Tuesday.

He ran away but the 27-year-old woman chased him on to Wellington Road.

The boy is described as black about 5ft 5in tall, and had short black hair.

Six libraries in Manchester secure £250,000 for revamp

Six libraries in Manchester have been given £250,000 to improve services for children.

The grant from the Wolfson Foundation and will go towards improving digital facilities, better furnishing, new shelves and picture books at libraries in Gorton, Longsight, Newton Heath, Harpurhey, Withington and Wythenshawe.

The libraries will remain open to the public during the revamp work, which started yesterday and should be completed by Friday 15 July.
