Ex-Man Utd and England star sentenced for drink-driving

Former England captain and Manchester United player Ray Wilkins has been given a 10-week suspended jail sentence for drinking and driving.

Wilkins, who pleaded guilty, was seen in his Mercedes in the middle of a bus lane on the A4 in London on 1 July.

Uxbridge Magistrates' Court heard the he also struck a kerb and was seen drinking alcohol from a bottle while driving, before attempting a U-turn.

The 59-year-old, who told the court he was an alcoholic, was nearly three times over the legal drink drive limit.

Travel: M62 delays at the Eccles interchange

There is heavy traffic on the M62 travelling eastbound, with queues building at the exit slip road for the M60 at junction 12 (Eccles interchange).

Elderly man 'puts boy in armlock' on train

An elderly man allegedly put a young boy in an armlock on a train because he would not take his feet off a seat.

The man, believed to be in his 70s, is understood to have confronted the child on the service from Clitheroe, Lancashire to Manchester Victoria on Friday.

Bury cycling star crowned best young rider of Tour de France

Bury's Adam Yates finished fourth overall in the Tour de France and claimed the white jersey for the best young rider in the race.

The Manchester United striker, England's all-time leading goalscorer, was part of the squad that was knocked out of Euro 2016 by Iceland in June.

"He will probably bring a different way of playing to England," Rooney said.

"Hopefully it's a good way and we can be successful under him."

Stalybridge school bounces back with improved Ofsted inspection

A school in Stalybridge which was in special measures has now been rated "good" by Ofsted inspectors.

St Paul's Church of England Primary on Huddersfield Road was deemed inadequate in March last year.

But a new report based on an inspection carried out in June said: "Leaders, managers and governors have shown a strong and relentless determination to improve the school."

Child put in armlock in 'train seat row'

Photographs have emerged purportedly showing a man putting a young boy in an armlock on a train to Manchester. 

The incident on a Clitheroe to Manchester Victoria service on Friday was reportedly snapped by another child travelling with the youngster.

A witness told the Manchester Evening News the man acted after the "cocky" boy would not take his feet off a seat. 

British Transport Police are investigating and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Woman hurt in crash involving two cars and ambulance

A woman has been taken to hospital after a crash involving two cars and an ambulance rapid response vehicle in Gorton earlier.

The victim was trapped in her car for almost an hour after the vehicles collided on Chapman Street, close to the junction with Hyde Road.

A paramedic in the ambulance was unhurt.

Ex-Man Utd star Ray Wilkins admits drink-driving

Former Manchester United and England footballer Ray Wilkins has pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

The 59-year-old, who made more than 150 appearances for the Red Devils in the early 1980s, was spotted driving his Mercedes in the middle of the A4 in London straddling a bus lane on 1 July.

Prosecutor Izolda Gribbin told Uxbridge Magistrates' Court he was seen "striking a kerb on the road" and drinking alcohol from the bottle while driving.

The court heard Wilkins, of Cobham, Surrey, was found to have 100mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

Two men have been charged with raping a woman in the Piccadilly basin area of Manchester on Saturday.

The two 18-year-old men, one from Manchester and one from Gorton, will appear before Manchester Magistrates' Court later.

Football match raises money for Bosley mill blast community

A football match has taken place in Macclesfield to raise money for charities that helped a community following the Bosley mill explosion which claimed the lives of four people.

Bosley United played a team of celebrities, including some Coronation Street stars, on Sunday, a year on from the disaster. 

Cheshire Police said it is continuing to investigate the blast.

Cyclist dies hours after road accident

A cyclist died after a road accident hours after getting back on his bicycle and continuing his journey, say police.

Jason Lee Gibbs, 44, was cycling back from work in Gorton when he was involved in a collision with a car.

He  carried on home to Moss Side and went to bed but suffered a cardiac arrest and died early on Sunday in hospital. Officers are investigating.

Girl, 16, dies in Rochdale car crash

A teenage girl has died and four others have been injured in a crash in Rochdale.

Chloe Cockton, 16, who was from Rochdale was a passenger in the Renault Clio when it hit a pedestrian barrier on Bury Road at about 02:20 on Sunday.

The 19-year-old male driver of the car suffered a serious head injury and two girls aged 17 and a boy, 16, also needed hospital treatment.
