A pub in Wythenshawe has been nominated in two categories in the Great British Pub Awards.

Winners will be announced on 5 October.

Public inquiry into police shooting will be 'open and fearless'

A public inquiry into the death of an unarmed man who was shot by police will be "open and fearless", a court has heard.

Anthony Grainger, 36, from Bolton, was shot in the chest during a Greater Manchester Police operation in Culceth, Cheshire in 2012.

Judge Thomas Teague QC said the inquiry would look at the police operation, the decision to send armed officers and any failures in gathering intelligence.

It will begin on 16 January next year, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

Man seriously injured in axe attack in Stockport

A man has suffered serious head injuries after being attacked with an axe in Stockport, said police.

He has been left in a serious but stable condition in hospital after he was injured in Nelstrop Walk, Heaton Chapel at about 05:00.

A 41-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

Biomedical centre's £60m expansion will create 750 jobs

A £60m expansion of Manchester's biomedical centre of excellence Citylabs has been announced.

The aim is to provide laboratory space where pharmaceutical companies can create new drugs in collaboration with scientists, NHS and academics from the University of Manchester.    

The Oxford Road development which is a joint venture between Manchester Science Partnerships (MSP) and Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust  is expected to create 750 new jobs.

Travel: Altrincham tram line back to normal

Metrolink said services on the Altrincham line are now running normally. 

There had been disruption earlier due to points failure.

Woman, 76, killed in Salford bus collision is named

A woman who died after being hit by a bus in Salford has been identified as 76-year-old Maureen Bradshaw.

The collision happened in East Lancashire Road on the evening of 20 July.

Ms Bradshaw, from Swinton, was taken to hospital where she later died.

Police admit hacking phone of sacked officer's ex-partner

The ex-partner of a senior officer sacked by Greater Manchester Police for gross misconduct has been told her phone was hacked by detectives.

Ch Insp John Buttress was found to have breached professional standards over his mortgage at a private police disciplinary hearing in September 2015.

He was later cleared by a jury but was dismissed by an independent panel. Police apologised for accessing his ex-partner Nicola O'Connor's voicemail.

Lancashire play Leicestershire knowing that it is their best chance of silverware this season.

"I'd love to play at a Lord's final so it's a big incentive and there's a trophy up for grabs as well," said captain Steven Croft.

Very slow traffic and long delays on the M60 clockwise between junction 16, Pendlebury, and 17, Prestwich, because of a crash which is now on the hard shoulder.

Congestion is backed up to junction 13, Worsley.

England v Pakistan: Michael Vaughan praises hosts' flawless display

England produced a flawless performance to beat Pakistan by 330 runs in the second Test at Old Trafford, said former captain Michael Vaughan.

England made 589-8 declared and 173-1 declared to set up their second biggest win over Pakistan in terms of runs.

Plane carrying Manchester City's Vincent Kompany 'lined up with wrong lights'

A plane understood to be carrying Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany came off the runway after the pilot lined up with the wrong set of lights, accident investigators have said.

The Citation CJ2 skidded off the runway at Norwich Airport in January.

Three passengers were on board the aircraft when two crew members mistook the runway's left edge lights for its centre, causing the plane to veer off.

Defender Kompany, who was reportedly on board at the time, had been sidelined with a calf injury for his team's FA Cup third-round game against Norwich City at Carrow Road before the flight.
