GMP conduct over missing Bury teen 'fell below standard expected'

An Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation has found no Greater Manchester Police officers were deployed to search for a missing teenager who has found dead in Bury last year.

The body of Thomas Gallagher, 16, was discovered in Old Kay’s Park in Tottington on 11 July 2015. An inquest concluded he had taken his own life.

Evidence gathered by the IPCC showed no officers were deployed to a missing person report until the discovery of his body five hours later.

The IPCC looked at GMP's response to the report and found that while the conduct of an inspector, sergeant, acting sergeant, constable and civilian radio operator did not not amount to misconduct, it "did fall below the standard expected".

The police watchdog said the unsatisfactory performance related to the overall management of the missing person report and of resources, the lack of contact with the person who made the report and the recording of information relating to it.
