Two held on suspicion of attempted murder after shooting

A further two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was shot in Manchester.

A 27-year-old man was found by police with gunshot wounds to his leg and abdomen at a takeaway on Rochdale Road, Harpurhey on 7 August.

He underwent surgery and is now in a stable condition.  

Two men, aged 21 and 26, both from Harpurhey were arrested earlier and remain in custody, Greater Manchester Police said.

A further two men - a 27-year-old man from Longsight and a 22-year-old man from Harpurhey - were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on Sunday and Thursday respectively.

Both have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Greater Manchester Police Federation pay tribute to three unarmed police officers who were shot dead on duty 50 years ago.

They were killed after spotting an armed robbery near Wormwood Scrubs, in west London, on 12 August 1966.

Arrest over Wigan attack

A man has been arrested after a man was knocked unconscious in Wigan.

A 28-year-old man was hit on the back of his head after being approached by a group of men in Wallgate after a night out on 30 July.

He suffered serious head and facial injuries.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and violent disorder. He has been released on bail until 11 November.

The move reunites the 21-year-old with former boss David Moyes, as well as ex team-mates Donald Love and Paddy McNair who joined for a combined £5.5m fee this week.

Belgium international Januzaj had asked to leave Old Trafford on a permanent transfer but United preferred a loan.

Manchester music legends New Order are launching their own beer.

The real ale - called Stray Dog after one of their songs - was created at Moorhouse Brewery in Burnley, Lancashire.

The new brew will be available from Monday 29 August.

Oldham GP surgery in special measures

A GP surgery in Oldham has been placed in special measures after being rated inadequate by a health watchdog.

The Care Quality Commission found some of the staff at Greenbank Surgery, including GP partners, did not know how to report incidents or concerns.

Inspectors also found appropriate recruitment checks had not been undertaken before staff members started work at the surgery.

NHS Oldham Clinical Commissioning Group is yet to comment.

Man stabbed in neck in Levenshulme

A man has been stabbed in the neck in Levenshulme.

The man, in his 30s, was found injured at the junction of Matthews Lane and Lonsdale Road at about 06:00.

He was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

Paul Pogba to miss Manchester United's season-opener

The suspension, revealed by the Football Association, relates to a ban incurred while at former club Juventus.

"He was booked twice in last season's Coppa Italia final, which results in a one-game ban," said the FA. "This has been transferred to England."

Greater Manchester Police has apologised after armed officers raided the wrong house in an operation following two shootings in Manchester - giving the residents quite a surprise.

Ch Insp Mark Dexter, of GMP said officers were following up intelligence about two houses in the Clayton area of the city. 

"When officers entered one address it was discovered to be unconnected to the investigation and officers have apologised to the occupants and will ensure any damage to the property is repaired," he said.

Salford Royal boss brought in to improve 'inadequate' NHS trust

The chief executive of Salford Royal hospital has been brought in to the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust in a bid to improve standards.

Inspectors raised serious concerns about Pennine Acute Trust, which runs four hospitals - North Manchester General, Fairfield in Bury, Royal Oldham and Rochdale Infirmary - and rated it as inadequate.

The inspection report blamed poor management and a shortage of staffing and said patient safety was at risk.

Part of the issue has been that people have tolerated standards they shouldn't have done. Partly because they were reporting them but weren't listened to.

Yorkshire Ripper 'to move back to prison'

The Yorkshire Ripper - who murdered women in Yorkshire and Greater Manchester -  is expected to move out of Broadmoor psychiatric hospital and into a prison after medical experts ruled him mentally fit, the BBC understands.

A health tribunal has found Peter Sutcliffe no longer needs any treatment for any mental disorder.

In 1981 he was convicted of 13 murders and seven attempted murders and given 20 life sentences.

Moving Sutcliffe would need to be approved by the Ministry of Justice.

A man has been charged with dangerous driving after a suspected hit-and-run in Bolton.

A 25-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car in Tonge Moor Road at about 08:50 on Tuesday.

A 34-year-old man has also been charged with failing to stop and driving without insurance and is due to appear at Bolton Crown Court on 7 September.

Two jailed for homeless man's murder

Two men have been jailed for life after murdering a fellow rough sleeper who they beat before setting him on fire in his tent.

The body of Daniel Smith, 23, was discovered by firefighters in a homeless camp under a railway bridge in Irwell Street, Salford, on 20 January.

Adam Acton, 24, and Luke Benson, 25, attacked Mr Smith after he accidentally "urinated on bedding within the camp", the Crown Prosecution Service said.

At Manchester Crown Court Benson was ordered to serve a minimum jail term of 20 years and 165 days and Acton was given a minimum of 21 years and 166 days.

Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust 'inadequate' on safety

One of the largest hospital trusts in England has been rated inadequate amid "serious concerns" over patient safety.

An inspection found risks were "not escalated in a timely way, if at all" at the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust which runs four hospitals in the north east area of Greater Manchester.

The Care Quality Commission watchdog stopped short of putting it in special measures following the appointment of a new leadership team.

A trust spokesman said "immediate actions" were being taken.

Travel: Road remains closed as building at blast site remains unsafe
