Police searching for missing Manchester man launch murder investigation

The unexplained disappearance of a man in Manchester is now being treated as a murder investigation, police say.

Michael Martin, 25, was last seen at his home in Sidmouth Drive, Blackley, in the early hours of 7 August. 

Greater Manchester Police have since searched four properties across the city and a room at the Premier Inn in Higher Blackley - Mr Martin's car was discovered in nearby Vermere Avenue. 

The force said it was now treating the investigation as a "non-body murder". In a previous appeal, officers said they believed Mr Martin may have been assaulted.

Girls, 15, left 'terrified' after attempted abduction in Mottram

Police are appealing for witnesses after an attempted abduction in Mottram which left two 15-year-old girls "absolutely terrified".

The girls were sitting on a bench at the junction of Back Moor and Mottram Moor at about 01:00 on Monday when three men approached them in a Vauxhall Astra.

They managed to escape the men, who were all described as Asian and in their early 20s.

The Rochdale MP was suspended by the Labour Party in December after he admitted sending lewd texts to a 17-year-old girl.

Henry Barker, 20, has admitted causing death by careless driving but denies causing death by dangerous driving at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court. 

The jury saw Shahzaib running out onto the street from the mosque, where he had been at afternoon prayers with his father and uncle, before being hit by a Mercedes.

Lottery grants of £1.5m help vulnerable across Greater Manchester

Almost £500,000 has been awarded to the Rugby League Cares project to improve men's mental health in Salford, Warrington and Wigan in the latest round of lottery grants. 

Urban Outreach in Bolton, which helps vulnerable children, is also to receive £420,000 as part of the £1.5m given to organisations in Greater Manchester.

The 22-year-old suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage in a tackle by Castleford's Rangi Chase as the Warriors lost 36-22 on Friday.

Two friends who set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest crossing of Loch Ness by tandem kayak last year are preparing for a new challenge.

This month they hope to kayak 74 miles (120km) of the River Spey from Kingussie to Spey Bay.

Plane crashes into trees after take-off at Salford airport

A light aircraft has crashed into trees shortly after taking off in Salford.

The pilot, 67, was rescued from the single-seater plane after crashing on the east side of City Airport in Barton at about 13:00 yesterday.

He suffered serious injuries including a broken leg and was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

A clean-up operation is being carried out at the scene. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has been informed.
