Masked woman armed with a metal bar robs shop

Police are appealing for information after a masked woman armed with a metal bar robbed a shop in Golborne.

The woman was wearing a grey hat that covered her face during the robbery at the shop on Bank Street at about 21:40 on 15 February.

She was seen on CCTV waiting on the corner of Peter Street, before covering her face and entering the shop. 

The woman demanded cash from the till and fled towards Peter Street. 

She is described as white, of slim build, wearing a black jacket with black jeans and a grey hat.

Manchester City Council flies flag at half mast for Sir Gerald Kaufman

The Manchester Town Hall flag is being flown at half mast as a mark of respect to Sir Gerald Kaufman, who has died aged 86 .

Manchester City Council said books of condolence are being opened at the town hall as well as Arcadia, Fallowfield, Gorton and Longsight libraries alongside an online version .

Manchester has lost a great friend and the people of Gorton a great servant with the sad passing of Sir Gerald Kaufman. He has had a remarkable parliamentary career championing his constituency and city and it is only fitting that we pay appropriate tribute to him.

Flying the flag at half mast is a rare honour but it reflects his stature serving Manchester people over almost half a century.”

Household recycling levels are too low in England because council schemes are too confusing, campaigners from Keep Britain Tidy claim .

In Greater Manchester only Trafford and Stockport have so far managed to recycle more than 50%.

Police and RSPCA investigating Macclesfield fox attack reports

Cheshire police are working with the RSPCA to investigate reports of dogs from a hunt attacking a fox in a residential area in Macclesfield.

A fox was found dead in an elderly couple's back garden on Penningtons Lane on Saturday. 

One resident told BBC Radio Manchester dogs were seen in people's gardens and the master of the hounds was struggling to control them.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Cheshire Forest Hunt has been contacted for a response.

The Hunting Act, passed by the Blair government in 2004, says foxes cannot be killed by dogs in hunts in England and Wales.

Winter Hill disaster: Air crash victims remembered

A memorial service to commemorate the 35 people who died in the Winter Hill air disaster near Bolton almost 60 years ago has been held.

Only seven of the 42 people on board survived when their Manx Airlines plane crashed in thick fog into the north-east slope of the hill above Horwich on 27 February 1958.

Most of the victims were mechanics, engineers and motor traders from the Isle of Man who were on a trip to visit Manchester's Exide battery factory.

They were travelling on a Bristol 170 Freighter operated by Manx Airlines when it crashed in bad weather after a key navigational error.

The memorial service was held this morning at the Winter Hill Memorial in the Isle of Man.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn led the tributes to Sir Gerald Kaufman, Labour MP for Manchester Gorton and Father of the House of Commons, who has died aged 86 .

A study has shown Rochdale has the third highest average number of schizophrenia prescriptions in England.

The analysis by the University of East London revealed "hotspots" of schizophrenia and other psychotic illnesses in England, based on the amount of medication prescribed by GPs. 

North Kesteven, in Lincolnshire, had the highest rates while East Dorset had the lowest. 

Manchester was another high-prescribing pocket.

Former Labour Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has added his voice to tributes to Manchester Gorton MP, Sir Gerald Kaufman, who has died aged 86 .

Mr Brown described him as a "brilliant speaker" and a "conscientious constituency MP". 

Sir Gerald served as an MP in Manchester for 47 years and was also a shadow minister during the 1980s and 1990s.

The only winners flying the flag for the Brits at the Oscars this year were Joanna Natasegara and Orlando von Einsiedel (pictured), who won best documentary short for The White Helmets.

The Netflix documentary about the Syrian civil war, which focuses on volunteer rescue workers who pull people from bombed buildings, was produced by Manchester filmmaker Ms Natasegara.

She said being without Syrian cinematographer Khaled Khatib, who was barred from travelling to the US for the ceremony, had made the evening "bitter-sweet".

Sculptors to reveal Emmeline Pankhurst statue models

Six sculptors shortlisted to create a statue of Emmeline Pankhurst for Manchester will unveil their ideas of what it should look like later at the Houses of Parliament.

Each sculptor will reveal a 40cm-high model which they have created to give an idea of what the full-scale statue could look like.

They will go on public display at Manchester Town Hall from Saturday.

The White Helmets focuses on rescue workers who pull people from bombed buildings in the Syrian civil war. 

Produced by Ms Natasegara (pictured above with director Orlando Von Einsiedel), the film was one of five nominated for the category. 

Earlier this week, Syrian cinematographer Khaled Khatib who worked on the film was barred from entering the US for the ceremony.

Keep Britain Tidy (KBT) says at least 300 systems are in use and government figures show one council's recycling rate is just 15%, with an England average of 43.9%.

In Greater Manchester only Trafford and Stockport have so far managed to recycle more than 50%.

KBT is urging the government to create a national "recycling blueprint".

The bout has been arranged after Pacquiao's followers on Twitter voted Khan as the opponent they would like to see the Filipino fight next.

"This is what the fans wanted," Pacquiao, 38,  said on social media.

Ibrahimovic, 35, joined United in the summer on a one-year deal - with an option to extend his stay at Old Trafford for a second season.

The Swede has scored 26 goals in 38 games this season, including two in the  3-2 EFL Cup final  win over Southampton.

"I never beg a player to play for me, but we all want and believe he will stay one more season," said Mourinho.
