Tips for a special parkrun weekend

#GetInspired

It's a special weekend in parks around the country.

This Saturday, 19 August, those who take part in their local parkrun might find themselves jogging alongside some of the country's sporting stars.

It's all part of a campaign for National Lottery-funded athletes to give a bit back and say thank you.

Here's Team GB rowing legend Katherine Grainger with more information about parkrun.

Hope & Glory Festival cancellation report due

An investigation into the controversial cancellation of Liverpool's Hope & Glory Festival will report back at the end of August, Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson says.

Hope & Glory Festival
HOPE & GLORY FESTIVAL

The second day of the event was cancelled earlier this month amid reports of overcrowding, long delays for artists and acts axed at the last minute.

A firm of independent event safety experts are conducting the review.

"We run a number of events with the private sector which are attended by thousands of people and they run really well.

"You only have to look at archive pictures to see the events which have taken place around St Georges Hall – cup final celebrations, managed demonstrations, Pride events and others.

Whilst you could raise [the site in St John’s Garden] as a potential issue, it hasn’t been an issue in the past; the inquiry will look at that."

College merger proposals dropped

Andy Giddings

BBC Local Live

Plans to merge North Shropshire College and Reeseheath College in Nantwich have been shelved after failing to attract government funding.

North Shropshire College has been struggling with its finances and with critical inspection reports. The two institutions have been working together for over a year, to turn things around.

North Shropshire College
BBC

They say they'd been in talks with two government funding agencies for 10 months, but had to conclude "there is not a viable solution".

The two colleges now say they will look for an alternative way forward, rather than a merger, to "ensure that the outcome serves the needs of our students, employers and community as effectively as possible”.

The conclusion to this process is disappointing to both colleges and the government, but we have explored all possible long-term funding support and unfortunately there is not a viable solution."

Fracking: Shale rock professor says UK gas reserves 'hyped'

The gas reserves in shale rocks in the UK have been "hyped", an academic said.

Shale gas extraction
BBC

Professor John Underhill from Heriot-Watt University said the UK's potential shale deposits were likely to have been disrupted by shifts in the earth 55 million years ago.

He said the government would be wise to formulate a Plan B to fracking for future gas supplies.

But the fracking firm Cuadrilla said it would determine how much gas was present from its test drilling.

The company started drilling a pilot well at the Preston New Road site in Little Plumpton on Thursday to identify the best locations for shale gas extraction.
