"By relaxed we mean making the show more friendly to people with autism or other needs," said a spokesman.

When Paul Sculthorpe promised to "smash" the gruelling Marathon des Sables he did so fuelled by the thought that his friend Steve Prescott had dreamed of taking on the challenge.

closed the A562 Hillfoot Avenue in Hunts Cross and is causing traffic queues in both directions between the Macket's Lane and Speke Road.

Cannabis farm found after flat fire

A cannabis farm was discovered after a fire in Wavertree, Merseyside Police say.

Two hundred and fifty plants and cannabis growing equipment were found following a fire at a rented flat in Picton Road around 10:50 on Monday.

Officers also found electricity had been illegally diverted.

Robbers sprayed with fire extinguisher

Two robbers who tried to smash a display cabinet at a pawnbrokers fled after staff sprayed them with a fire extinguisher.

Albemarle & Bond on Prescot Road

Merseyside Police said the raiders attempted to smash the cabinet with a hammer at Albemarle & Bond on Prescot Road in Old Swan around 15:45 on Monday.

Police believe the same offenders stole jewellery just over an hour later at H&T Pawnbrokers on West Derby Road in Tuebrook.

Cyclist dies in lorry crash

A cyclist has died in a crash with a lorry in South Liverpool, police said.

Merseyside Police said the accident happened in Hillfoot Avenue, Hunts Cross at about 13:50.

The man has yet to be formally identified.

Pete Waterman has been talking about his time presenting The Hitman and Her from the show's "spiritual home" - Mr Smiths in Warrington, which was destroyed in a suspected arson attack today.

"It's bizarre, looking back, that with the music blaring on, you could do a live TV show - pioneering stuff really," he said.

"It was about music with a few games in it. This was night-time television and we were playing records - that's the point. It just wasn't meant to be anything other than entertaining.

"At that point, if you went into Mr Smiths, you would have seen exactly that. All we did was put a camera in a nightclub. We just showed what was going on in nightclubs and Mr Smiths was typical of 80s disco."

Eight people have been arrested over a blaze which ripped through a former nightclub in Warrington and tore the roof off the building.

At its height, 50 firefighters tackled the fire at Mr Smiths on Wilson Patten Street at 02:00 BST.

The fire service said unstable areas at the site are now due to be demolished.

A man, 43, was arrested on suspicion of arson along with four 17-year-old boys. A 16-year-old boy, 16-year-old-girl and a 15-year-old girl were also held. All are from the Warrington area.

Lorry that killed Runcorn motorcyclist was speeding

An HGV involved in a fatal collision in Runcorn that left a Vicars Cross motorcyclist dead

was travelling faster than the speed limit, an inquest heard.

Martyn Platts, 55, was riding home from work at 16:10 on 29 April 2014, when the crash happened on the bend linking the A533 Queensway to the A557 Weston Point Expressway.

"a minor blip" in a "fantastic career", says a players' union chief.

Sterling will be spoken to about his lifestyle by manager Brendan Rodgers.

Warrington road closures due to fire

The A5061 Wilson Patten Street in Warrington is closed and there is slow traffic in both directions between bank Quay Traffic Lights and the A49 Mersey Street junction because of the fire at the old Mr Smiths Nightclub.

A diversion is in operation via Liverpool Road and Crossfield Street. Academy Street between Cockhedge Way and Friar's Gate is also affected.

A man has appeared in court charged with making a threat to kill and being armed with a five inch steak knife.

Volkan Celebi, 23, from Leafield Road in Liverpool is accused of making the threat and carrying the knife on Water Street, St Helens on 8 April.

Sir Viv says Sterling must think about friendships

published in The Sun.

Grand National operation 'a success'

British Transport Police say their Grand National operation was "a success", with only one caution and one penalty notice issued across the three-day festival.


About 38,500 racegoers journeyed to Aintree by rail, most of whom showed "patience and good nature", a force spokeswoman said.

The force only had to take formal action on Saturday, when one caution was handed out for an incident of common assault at Liverpool Central Station and a penalty notice was given for drunk and disorderly behaviour at Aintree Station.

The chief executive of Warrington Council says plans for a youth club at the old Mr Smiths building have been "set back years" after a suspected arson attack.

Fire crews were called at 02:00 to the former nightclub and they are spending the rest of the day damping down after the roof collapsed.

It is likely the unit will have to be knocked down now. A 15-year-old girl, a 17-year-old boy and a 43-year-old man have all been arrested.

Duggan apologises for van Gaal photo

Manchester City's Liverpudlian striker Toni Duggan has

apologised for an "error of judgement" after posing for a photograph with Louis van Gaal.

Duggan deleted the photo with Manchester United's manager from her Instagram page after receiving criticism from City fans.

"I appreciate the significance of my actions and assure everyone connected with City that I am proud to represent the club,"

Sterling 'made mistake' over nitrous oxide

being filmed inhaling the legal high nitrous oxide but the 20-year-old Liverpool star should be treated with understanding, according to players' union chief Bobby Barnes.

Footage has emerged of Sterling appearing to take the substance and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has said

he will be speaking to his player about his lifestyle.

The deputy chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association said: "Nobody would condone the use of these substances as footballers are seen as role models. But you have to bear in mind that we ask an awful lot of young players growing up in the public eye.

"Many of us look back at things we have done in our teens and early 20s and wish we hadn't done them. He's made a mistake and people are human. I am sure this will be a minor blip."

a blaze ripped through a former nightclub in Warrington, tearing down the roof in the process.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire broke out at Mr Smiths on Wilson Patten Street at 02:00 BST.

The building suffered "severe damage" and nearby buildings were evacuated.

No-one is thought to have been injured in the blaze, which took 50 firefighters to bring under control.

robbed for the second time in a week.

Merseyside Police were called to H&T Pawnbrokers on West Derby Road at 17:05 on Monday.

The offender smashed the window of the pawnbrokers and stole a small number of items from the front window display.
