Man charged over £50k van drugs haul

A 45-year-old man has been charged with possession with intent to supply drugs after cannabis with an estimated street value of £50,000 was discovered in a van in St Helens.

Officers stopped a vehicle in East Lancashire Road, St Helens, at about 15:15 yesterday.

The man, from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, has also been charged with the unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle.

A paedophile has been branded the "living embodiment of every parent's worst nightmare" after grabbing a girl of 11 off the street and raping her.

Paul Ripley, 53, abducted the girl as she walked home in Ellesmere Port, Chester Crown Court heard.

He bundled her into his car and drove her hundreds of miles north to a field where he raped her twice.

Jailing him for ten years, Judge Nicholas Woodward told him he had acted "for your own sexual gratification".

Merseyside Police are investigating two shootings last night.

The man, in his 20's, is recovering after he was shot during a row between two groups on playing fields at the junction of Thomas Lane and Thingwall Avenue in Knotty Ash.

In a separate shooting, a house was fired at in Page Moss Avenue in Huyton though no-one inside was hurt.

Merseyside Police's organised crime unit are investigating what it described as the "coming together" of two groups. The shot man is hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
