Merseyside Police 'determined' to tackle gun crime

The head of Merseyside Police's Serious Organised Crime Unit says he's determined to tackle gun gangs before the problem escalates.

The force has begun a "disruption operation", making arrests and seizing cash and drugs following seven targeted shootings in the past week, where all but one was aimed at property.

Det Ch Supt Paul Richardson said gun crime has "fallen by more than half in the past year" and he is "determined to prevent it rising".

The game will be played on the eve of the 27th anniversary - and visiting fans have been invited to Friday's memorial service at Anfield.

Banteng birth at Chester Zoo boosts conservation of rare species

A rare banteng - a wild forest-dwelling member of the cattle family - has been born at Chester Zoo.

The South East Asian species is listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, with recent estimates suggesting there could be fewer than 5,000 left in the wild.

The female calf - which keepers have named Jasmine - means the zoo now has a herd of 10 – four males and six females.

Runcorn murder probe after man's death

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a 27-year-old man in Runcorn.

Officers were called to reports that a man had been injured in Warrington Road at about 20:30 on Tuesday. He was taken to Whiston Hospital where he later died.

Three men - aged 52, 38 and 36 - have been arrested in connection with the death. No further details have been released.

Drugs worth £750,000 seized in raids across Merseyside

Drugs with an estimated street value of £750,000 have been seized in a number of police raids across Merseyside.

Officers from the specialist Matrix unit found 4 kgs of heroin and 2 kgs of cocaine worth £500,000 in two properties in Norris Green.

Men aged 18, 22 and 32, as well as a 28-year-old woman, were arrested on Monday following the raids.

In a separate incident, 120kg of cannabis with a value of £250,000 was found at a property in Bootle.  

Warrington's King's Leadership Academy granted permission to build security fence

North West Ambulance Service has apologised to an elderly patient left lying in the road for 45 minutes as the service struggles to meet its response targets because of the growing volume of calls and pressures across the NHS.

Fire at Liverpool city centre restaurant

A "small electrical fire" broke out at a Liverpool city centre restaurant this morning.

The fire started in the kitchen at San Carlo in Castle Street. It was put out with a CO2 extinguisher by firefighters.

No injuries have been reported.

A shotgun and a quantity of class A drugs have been found in Speke.

Police were carrying out a search of woodland near Alderfield Drive and Millway Road when they made the discovery just before 15:00 yesterday.

Family of Liverpool WW2 pilot lost in bombing raids sought

The families of six World War Two pilots, including one from Liverpool, who did not return from bombing raids over Germany are being sought.

The Ministry of Defence said it was trying to trace relatives so they would be able to attend their burial service in Berlin on 27 April.

Pilot Officer John Donald Range Cromarty was on Lancaster JB640, which took off on 2 January 1944. 

He was born on 29 January 1921 in Liverpool to Ernest Cecil Cromarty and Margaret Agnes Range.

Nine arrested after Norris Green and Bootle £750k drugs find

Drugs with an estimated street value of £750,000 have been seized, following a series of raids across Merseyside.

Police found 4kgs of heroin and 2kgs of cocaine during searches at two properties in Norris Green, 120kgs of cannabis resin were also discovered in Bootle. 

Nine people have been arrested for a number of suspected offences. The raids follow a spate of shootings across the region in the past week.

Reduced PCSO cover in parts of Cheshire 'caused by rent cuts'

Two housing associations in Cheshire have stopped funding Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), blaming rent reductions imposed by the government.

Chancellor George Osborne announced last summer that social housing rents would fall by 1% each year until 2019.

The housing providers said this forced them into "very difficult decisions" over whether they could still afford PCSOs to cover their properties. Cheshire Police said the areas affected would still have policing cover.

The figures were released to the BBC following a series of Freedom of Information requests.
